I have hit a brick wall with Hartford insurance company.other than changing my insurance company can anyone give me any hints on how to proceed ? 1) I put my vehicle in off road status with Hawaii DMV while not using it for 5 to 6 months a year.2) I have attempted to get AARP Hartford to stop all coverage except comprehensive coverage during this period.3) Hartford first said it was against Hawaii State law to do this.4) I contacted Hawaii State insurance division and was told that their was no such law when I showed Hartford it was not against the law they changed their story and are saying it is against their policy ( only here in Hawaii they will do it in every other State except Florida)5) I have asked them why Hawaii policy holders are penalized and they can't give me a answer.6) I run into a brick wall, when I get to someone in supervision they say that is it, they will put my position in my file, and some obscure person will call me in 24 to 48 hours.7) The person refuses to give me their contact information and I never get the call back ( 4 times now )Can anyone give me any suggestions ?

Switch insurance companies and look for a local agent. What you're getting is not the Aloha spirit.

I buy insurance from an agent, not a company. Look for an agent you can trust and tell him what you want to insure and he will find your insurance for you. If you have any problems, tell the agent and he will handle it for you.

We do what the OP wants every year we leave for the winter but we don't live in Hawaii. chevman

You can drop comp and just have liability but most will NOT let you drop liability and just keep comp.They are an insurance company that's main directive is to insure your vehicle while you are driving. Not an insurance company to just cover your personal items such as the RV not driven.

Same thing here in WA No 6mo Policy from AArp Hartford Ins. They told me Hartford bases their rates on the probability that you won't use the RV year round, The RV is still insured all year.

In Az, you can drop liability by filling out a form online with the MVD. It states you will not be driving the vehicle on any public roadways. Very simple. No paperwork.

We did it through GMAC with our DP for several years. Kept the comprehensive coverage only. The caveat with GMAC was it had to be in " storage " for at least 30 days.

Each State is different, but I do know it is legal in Az. You just have to find an insurance Company that offers it.

AARP is going to crap. They use to be good and have the lowest costs. No more.
They were overcharging me for the last 5 years and I've been with them for 20 years and zero claims..
I switched ins. co. and saved 40% and with better coverage.
Search around for a better deal- I did.

I thought if you drop liability you have to turn your tags in. but you can just drop it down to the state minimum requirement.

regarding #4, I was told they won't do it in Montana. But if they did the savings would not be worth the paperwork.
So, all things considered, including the wonderful way they handled the hail damage to my house, I decided to stay with them.
BUT, I do not have the AARP/Hartford insurance. I found that the AARP rates were higher than the rate I am paying now, so joining AARP was not worth it.

I've often wondered what would happen if a vehicle is stolen while in storage (with only comprehensive coverage on it) and the thief crashes it and possibly injures someone.
Would the vehicle owner be covered for any of the resultant damage and personal injury liability?

Having been an agent for nearly 30 years, I have a short list of companies I would insure with, all have agents involved in their distribution. Hartford is one I would not insure with unless absolutely necessary. In Oregon we are a mandatory liability State and I have a form for people to sign when they are storing a vehicle and drop liability coverage. It's simple to do. The big reason I won't insure with Hartford through AARP is seeing a client who was insured with them and got a no seat belt citation. Her rates tripled with that cite, had I not seen her prior deck page I would not have believed it. They also increase rates for comp claims.

If you are getting poor customer service from a company why ask what you already know? Contact some other companies that would want your business.

GMAC does, or used to. Might want to check them out.
