Probs getting title

My daughter brought a trailer from D&J Trailer sales in Indiana several months ago. She paid for it upfront. They delivered the trailer - but despite umpteen phone calls, no title! Not sure what options we have at this point. But it is very frustrating.

I do know that Ohio is a title holding state. I do know that Ohio BMV holds the title if there is a lien but I don't know about trailers without a lien. Click on the link and enter her VIN number. It should show her title. If she has all of the paper work showing the trailer is paid for she should be able to go to any BMV office and get a title on the spot. https://services.dps.ohio.gov/BMVOnlineServices/Search/Title

NOTE: My reading comprehension sucked. I missed the Indiana part and I only saw where the OP was from..

Don't be so quick to judge something you seem to know little about. You don't always get a title from the dealer/seller when you buy a vehicle. We just bought a car in Kansas and you pay the dealer and you leave with paperwork, but no title, that comes in the mail after a week or two. We knew that going in, that's the way Kansas does their paperwork.

So, no you don't always get a title.

I would contact the state.
You won't get a title from the dealer when buying new because there isn't one - just a certificate of origin (COO). The dealer is supposed to take that to the state so a title, registration and plates can be issued.
Our last 2 purchases took almost two months each for the titles to come through.

in Ohio..

a light weight trailer below a set weight does not have a title..
registration is the title...

I had a 300 pound cycle trailer... so I know a little ๐Ÿ™‚

^^^^^^ You do NOT leave with a title in hand. The Dealer sends paperwork to the State and title is later received.

I assume she left with a temp registration and license plate or temp tag?

May be worth taking whatever paperwork she has to the local County Licensing Department to see where the process is. It does take a lot of time, sometimes!
I agree. However, after several months, the title is long overdue.

If no processing of the title is found at the local licensing Dept., I would follow up taking jkwilson's advice and follow the link he posted.

If this is a travel trailer or fifth-wheel, she paid cash.... AND dealer will not reply to her calls, IMO, she needs to contact the Department of Motor Vehicles for her home state. Most towns have a local office. That will get the dealers attention. Let the DMV get to the bottom of it.

Not to be unsympathetic but she paid cash and did not leave with the hot little title in her hand? Like she trusted a 'stealer'? By now she's realizing that having the title in hand is as important or maybe more important than having the trailer in her drive. Think it is now well past time for her to hire an attorney. Not something she should be playing telephone tag with.

Do you have the whole story? Has the dealer submitted the old title to her state DMV and is waiting for the DMV to mail it to her? Has the dealer been asked to show evidence that they submitted the title to the DMV. Has anyone spoken with either her state or the dealer's state AG office that regulates 'stealers?'

What type trailer? Was it a utility type trailer, if so, a title might not be given. Here in Florida, a light weight trailer is usually delivered with an MSO (Manufacturer Statement of Origin) and no title.
