Yes that symbol means pounds in the USA. However that still dont say much about propane capacity in tanks. With it being a MH it "might" actually tell the capacity in gallons. Most newer MHs do, alot of older ones do not though. Horizontal filled tanks get filled by volume. There is a bleeder valve near the top. When filling, that valve is opened, when liquid escapes the valve opening, the tank is full (well 80%-that is the limit to which "any" propane cylinder can be filled)

As far as portable cylinders are concerned. There are codes on the neck that is to be used when filling. There is a formula that uses those codes, that determine the "weight" the cylinder will be when full. Therefore they are filled by weight.

In some parts of the country the tanks are filled and priced by weight, in other places they measure and charge by gallons.

Your Damon coach most likely has a 23.9 gallon ASME permanently installed tank. 23.9 gallons is approx 100 pounds of propane. A 23.9 pound tank would be incredibly small for a 32 ft Class A. The label attached to the tank should have the full details on it.

If he has a motor home, more that likely he has a permanently mounted tank. If so, it is filled when the MH is parked next to the propane dispenser.

Well, yes. It is 32foot Class A with a built-in, horizontally mounted Manchester propane tank...labeled 23.9#------and it is filled "at the pump". With all your answers to my questions, I have gleaned that the 23.9 pounds converts to 100.38 pounds. Maybe that tank size is a bit small for a 32-footer....but what it is, is what it is. The original purchaser got to make all the decisions and I have to liVe with it. So far.....I love working on it and am looking forward to my first long-distance trip. Made two short over-night trips here in Colorado, made many repairs (including all 6 new tires) and think I have most of the kinks worked out.

Winner, winner, chicken dinner! The 23.9# represents the rare weight of the container.

The misplacement of the "#" sign is one of the many things that are all too common.
Generally, if the "#" sign is IN FRONT or the number, it means "number", as in "You #10!"
If the "#" sign is after a number, it means "pounds".
I agree, the 23.9# probably means that the TARE (empty) weight of the cylinder is 23.9 pounds.

Except that the OP does not have a DOT "cylinder", he has an ASME "tank". 23.9 is the gallons rating for his 100 LB propane tank. The tare weight is typically not stated on ASME tank labels, since they're never filled by weight.
