Pros and cons of purchasing out of state

We bought out last 2 far from home. The place you buy your WD hitch should set it up and show you how to set it up. They can't do that without the TT.

Beware, some places think they know how to set up a WD hitch but don't, or just don't want to take the time. Read enough to get an idea of what should happen and then watch them do it.

The only issue that comes to mind is having warranty work done by a local dealer. We live in Missouri and bought our toyhauler in Tennessee, but we had a recall issue and the local dealer took care of the warranty job quickly. Any dealer that works on the brand you buy should do warranty work, but some dealers may be a bit put out that you didn't buy from them and will put your unit at the back of their queue. We talked with our local dealer before we bought elsewhere and made sure we could have him do warranty work.

We also registered our toyhauler before we picked it up so we had a valid license plate. And in our case we had a certain amount of time to take the unit out of Tennessee or we would have to pay taxes on it. Not a big deal as we were leaving the state the next day.

I purchased my FW factory direct in KS and brought it back to PA. They had the paperwork all in order so I'd pay sales tax and get a title in PA. I certainly would have preferred the PA dealer that sold my previous two but they had stopped doing warranty service anyway.

We also ordered and bought our unit factory direct in Kansas. When we need service, we return to Kansas RV Center (former NuWa/HitchHiker factory). We schedule an appointment, show up at the appointed time, and they have a team assigned to work on the RV. No waiting for weeks for the dealer to look at it. They try to get your 5th wheel back to you at the end of the day for your use at the nearby city campground that is free for the first 2 nights. So ordering out of state was worth it to us. We are fulltimers so traveling to Kansas for service is no big deal for us.

X2 to all of that.

Pros: Save lots of money

Cons: Can't think of any...If you travel you won't be near your selling dealer anyway if something goes wrong. Buying locally is no guaranty that you will get good service when needed.

A dealer should know how to handle this, no problem. Call your county clerk if you have questions. I don't know if out of state dealers are required to collect TN sales tax or not. Probably are. Chances are the dealer will collect the sales tax and you will get temporary tags to drive home.

Be sure and contact your insurance agent ASAP.

If it's an individual, again, call the county court clerk. You definitely need to get the title and a bill of sale before you leave. You will pay the lovely TN sales tax when you go to register the RV.

Be very careful about sales tax if you have it in your state. Depending on the circumstances you may have to pay twice.

When I took delivery in KS they gave me a form that certified it wouldn't be titled there and was exempt from KS sales tax.

Are you sure?

I'm pretty sure that all the states have laws and forms to ensure you don't get hit twice.
