Qualified as 'towable'?

Sorry y'all. I think I put this in the wrong sub-topic earlier.

Good evening everyone. Just a 'lurker' at present, but wonder if anyone is flat-towing a Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid. I have discovered that my '09 Acura MDX is not towable. Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks to everyone for the replies. There's a lot I need to be learning and some hard decisions to be made in the next six months. It's a pleasure to be in a position to feel comfortable asking what must seem like inane questions to most of you. Thanks again.

  • You want a towable hybrid??? Look at the Ford Excape hybrid or the Ford Fusion hybrid. I believe that they are both towable 4 down.
  • As already said, the Prius is not flat towable. Not sure about the Honda hybrid.

Ford's hybrids are flat towable, though, and a good bit easier to flat tow than many newer vehicles. No need to disconnect battery (like you must do with Ford Focus or Fiesta), no need to run engine 5 minutes after every few hours of towing like many require. No need to pull any fuses, either. Just put it in neutral and go, basically. Can tow all day, all you want, up to 70 mph. Just need to add a charge line, to keep battery charged up, and you're good.

If you like hybrids and need to flat tow, look at a Ford Cmax or Fusion hybrid. Hybrids make a great vehicle to have with you when RVing, as it allows you to get around campgrounds very quietly on electric power (and 'cleanly' - no exhaust). Not to mention the incredible mileage it gets when driving it. Makes up some for all the gas you burn in the MH, hahaha. :)
  • go to http://www.motorhome.com/download-dinghy-guides/ it will tell you which vehicle is towable 4 down per the Owners Manual with out modifications. Some of the Ford hybrids are towable 4 down. Regards, Dick
  • Is there any particular reason you are looking at hybrids? The only reason I ask is that you are basically are towing an extra 500lbs just in batteries around. I would think you would be better off with something like a Ford Fiesta or a Fiat 500. Prius' weigh in about 3000-3100lbs where as the Fiesta/Fiat are in the 2400-2500lbs range.
