Question about PMBs

To all SD mail forwarding clients how many of the services in SD have PMB in the address? i.e. 3916 N Potsdam Ave PMB XXXX

Dakota Post and Americas Mailbox do, what about the others?

If I remember right there is one in Emory, Chamberlain, Madison and another in Sioux Falls.

Having issues with the PMB part of the address.

I have a PMB address and use the PMB syntax whenever it is accepted. When it is not accepted I use: # , APT, SUITE, etc.

The parcel store where my mailbox is located has told me that THEY do not care what syntax I use as long as my box number is on the address label so that they don't have to look up my box number.

My driver license has a # instead of PMB.

We used Escapees mail service in Texas and no PMB was on our address or driver's license. You can now do Escapees from South Dakota as well as Florida.

I thought i recalled that the post office required either PMB or # as a prefix to the box number. I took a look at the site referenced above by mike-s and one or the other is required. We always used the # sign. From what other posters have said about using no suffix, the PO must not enforce the requirement.

From the site:
"The Delivery Address Line is the standardized address of the private company.
Private companies offering mailbox rental services to individuals and businesses are considered commercial mail receiving agencies (CMRA). Addresses on mail received at a CMRA must adhere to specific requirements in the use of their private mailbox number (PMB). Mail sent to an addressee at a CMRA must include either the PMB identifier or the #, followed by the appropriate private mailbox number. Use of any other identifier is prohibited. Either a three line or four line address format can be used with a CMRA address and the PMB or # identifier, with the exception noted below. Where the CMRA's physical address requires its own secondary address element, the PMB or # address must follow the specific format rules stated below. It is not permissible to combine the secondary address element of the mailing address for the CMRA and the CMRA customer's private box number."

You can put whatever you want as an address for the DMV leaving out the PMB part however, when they type up the address for your license, it will come out with the PMB. The address you are using shows up as a commercial mail forwarding address and then gets tagged with the PMB. No way around it.

I have been in Sioux Falls since 2001 and have never had an issue with it. If you are concerned about firearm purchase and being denied, the store is making up their own rules by denying the purchase. The big box stores such as Scheels, Cabelas, and a few others don't know the regulations. Find a small mom and pop shop. Been there, done that.

Take a look at the state and federal regulations concerning firearms purchases. There is nothing in the regulations that state "no sales to anyone with a PMB address".

If this isn't about firearms, forget that part.

Yes correct about the DMV and from your answer all the mail forwarding companies will use the PMB in their address.

Firearms purchase is part of the issues but as you said there is nothing in the law about PMBs.

I am also a resident of Minnehaha county but spent more time in Custer County and am looking to change to Custer County so there are some things to work out. I am staying in SD in the summers and wintering in AZ

Let me clear this up a little bit.

I have been a SD resident since 2004 and know most of the ins and outs of using or not using the PMB.

My question is for those folks that use a mail service here in SD do any of them not use a PMB number at the end of the address?

My problems are when I have to pull out the drivers licence on some transactions to be used as an ID the PMB causes some issues.

Why not leave the "PMB" out of the address then? When the mail gets delivered to the address, they'll know what to do with it - the "PMB" doesn't help them, all they need is the box #.

Bill

The DMV knows the addresses of the Mail Services and they the DMV will put the PMB on the Licence I have no choice.

We use America's Mailbox - their preferred address is their street address with a #xxxx added (xxxx = the box number). While it IS a PMB, the post office and almost everybody else will accept that format. Some places want the box number on a separate address line, but that's no big deal.

We generally leave the PMB out of our address however, there are places like DMV that know it is a PMB. Having a PMB for the last 8 years has not caused even one problem. We use mydakotaaddress and Terri is awesome to deal with.

For 7 yrs our address was:

Or Apt. #

Alternative Resources didn't have an issue with it....it had the number on it.

Just use any of those when doing your change of addresses
