Hello, I am looking into getting a TT but am getting discouraged due to the apparent low payload rating my truck has at 1,070lbs. I weighed my truck (2014 Ram 1500 Big Horn) loaded up with the family and a bit of gear and it weighed in at 6,450lbs. My GVWR is only 6,800. Minus a hitch and I'm only left with aprox. 300lbs for hitch weight. Some of the TTs I've been looking at have a hitch weight of 600lbs. I guess my question is have any of you had any experience with towing a little over your rating? is 300lbs. a lot or is it nothing?
Thanks

As you are educating yourself, learn about GAWR too. I think it's a much more useful and important number. The Ram 1500 payload can get used up quick, but there is wiggle room. And perhaps that bit of gear can be carried in the trailer. The truck will not come crushing to the ground if you exceed its ratings a little. If you constantly use it that way, it likely won't last as long. It's a hard lesson to learn, and it's too bad that kind of info isn't more obvious or available to the uninitiated. If it were me, I would stick to a lighter trailer, but would not hesitate to go with a 600 lb tongue weight, some of which will get distributed off the rear axle with a weight distributing hitch. Many here will likely condemn this advice. Take it all in and learn.

A 600 pound dry TW TT will be closer to 800 loaded. Get a new truck! It doesn't have to be new. A used 2012-2015 Ram 2500 gasser will be about the same value as your current truck.
