Replace fresh water tank

Hi All - Been doing some re-building, repairing water damage. As part of that I've removed the freshwater tank and found mold in it so I need to replace it. Also it's only 30 gallons and I'd like a little bigger tank. I'm running into a couple of issues. The tank sits under our sofa so we are limited to about 12" high, and 48" long and about 23" deep. I'm having trouble finding anything within those dimensions at a decent price. I did find a tank from Ameri-Kart that
is 42 gallons, but it doesn't come with the standard RV fittings. Does anyone have experience installing a tank like that, and it a big deal to install the fittings?

Thanks in advance for your thoughts

Installing fittings is fairly easy using a hole saw and bulkhead fittings.
Thanks! This looks doable, but I was afraid I'd screw it up and waste the $100 tank. Ended up finding one that would work with the fittings already installed.

Good find, glad it worked out for you.

Why not just remove the mold - seems easier than buying a replacement?
My wife has a thing about mold and would never allow me to re-install it now that she's seen it. Plus, I really wanted a larger tank anyway.

I was looking into ordering a similar size tank like you are looking for to add under my jackknife sofa. I wanted more water capacity for boondocking to supplementing my 36 gallon tank mounted under the trailer. Instead I purchased a 50 gallon tank for the truck bed. Grey water disposal was not an issue for me camping on private land.

Plastic-mart has a lot to choose from. They have 5 different 42 gal rectangular tanks but to fit the limits of your dimensions, you may have to go with a 40 gallon tank. At the left side of the column when you click the tank size it will take you to another page. There it will show you the standard layout for fittings they will add to one end of the tank. One is a 1-1/4 npt female at the top Center, 1/2 inch npt female at the top left corner and 1/2 inch npt female at the bottom center. The standard fitting layout is $20 extra. They do custom fittings where you want them on the tank. You will have to print off the order form and mark the drawing showing the location and sizes of the fittings where you want them located, but it will cost more.
Thanks! I had seen Plastic Mart, but they were too rich for my blood. I found a 40 gallon tank that came with fittings on Amazon, it's an inch deeper than I wanted, but I'll install the sofa with spacers to accommodate the extra inch, and it was only $114 with shipping. Thanks for all that shared their thoughts and ideas.

  • It's common to have to install your own fittings since no two RV manufacturers use the same configuration.
