Since you invited me, I will opine!
I believe that all representatives and congressmen that have served over the past twenty years should be convicted of treason and hung by the neck until dead. This would be for their crimes committed against the united states by creating the energy situation that we are in today.
I commend our leaders for a superb job of keeping the Untied States as the technology and production leaders in renewable transportation fuel. A real plus is we now import billions less gallons of fossil oil every year now which is adding trillions to our own economy.
With that being said, we must do a few things to start the ball rolling in the right direction.
1) Repeal all laws restricting drilling in ANWR and off of our coasts.
2) Build some refineries. Oil is useless without a way to turn it into fuel.
3) Embrace nuclear energy. We made a few bad films about Nuclear that devastated the industry.
4) Dump the subsidy and mandate for "food to fuel" programs. Admit it was a bad idea.
1) I agree, drilling in the tundra wasteland that 3 polar bears inhabit is a good idea as well as off-shore.
2) Oil companies will not be building any new refineries anytime soon. The cost of a refinery and the decade+ it takes to build one is not money they are willing to risk (and wisely so for the investors) when they cannot tell if it will be profitable so far off in the future.
3) Nuclear energy is a great idea also but its not exactly helping a lot right now with our real need being transportation fuel.
4) A bad idea would be to stop using domestic ethanol, not the other way around and please stop saying “food for fuel” as some people might believe we actually do that! We grow 13+ billion bushels of corn in this country and about 80% is was fed directly to livestock, about 10% for human consumption and about 10% exported.
The ethanol we make now is made from a portion of what we used too feed directly to livestock. Now we make ethanol first and feed the byproduct to livestock giving us two products out of the same corn! This is a smart idea! On top of that the Clean Air Act requires an oxygenate be added to gasoline to make it burn cleaner so we have cleaner air … ethanol is perfect for this!
If we embrace some of these ideas, we may see some relief down the road. If not, we won't.
I saw yesterday where the House passed a bill allowing us to sue OPEC. That is simply insanity. If anyone should be sued it should be the idiots in Washington.
Ok I'm done. I have to go to work now. ;-)
(I need to stop and put $150 worth of gas in my Suburban)
No this is not a bad idea, price fixing is a no, no in any industry here and nobody said you have a right to cheap fuel for your Suburban.
