I think the "rhyme and reason" is supply and demand.

As for "greed", do you tell your boss "no, I don't want a raise"?

Without the profit motive, we would have NO fuel.

Don't forget, our government (despite restricting oil) makes more "profit" than the oil companies do. At least the oil companies are supplying the product we want. That's more than the government does.
