Petrolium is a finite natural resource as is natural gas, coal, and uranmium, among others. They will all run out at some point, and as they become limited, demand will outstrip supply, and prices will soar. Supply can also be limited if the major producers decide to limit production. That is what you are seeing over the last several decades. OPEC and others have limited oil production to keep oil prices up (BTW, there are many who believe that diamonds are extremely common, but producers create an artificially low supply, but I digress). Refineries are not being built in anticipation of need, but to meet current needs (maybe). A secondary derivative market buys/sells oil options that ends up manipulating prices. The cost of gasoline at the pump is in the hands of others, but someday will become ridiculous--but when is someday? In the meantime, people like you and me are at the whims of others as it comes to gas/diesel prices. We do have some ability to control things, doubling the MPG in our cars effectively reduces our $ per mile in half. Regardless of what we do, we are only postponing the inevitable.

But enough doom and gloom. If your MH gets 10 MPG, and the distance from East Coast to West Coast is 2500 miles, for each dollar the price of gas increases, the cost of going one-way cross country increases by only $250. If you travel 500 miles per day--which is a farily high continuous rate--your additional cost is $50 per day.

Monday at Walmart gas was $1.84 Wednesday it was at $1.98 and today it was $1.78. Now will someone tell me why it goes up and down so much? I have seen Walmart change the price 4 times in one day and change it twice in less then 3 hours. I just cant figure it out.

They can charge all they want!if no one has a job they`re not gonna buy $5.00 a gal. gas! period. our economy, including everyone elses, cannot absorb the inflated prices people are throwing around out there! personally I don`t see it going over $3.00 a gal.

How is Europe making it today when the consumers are paying more like $8 a gallon? It will stay low until we start burning more than we are pumping like before.

What are we going to do when MX who is supplying 12% of our crude becomes a net importer when things get hot again?

The answer is to get off of oil but that will take 20-50 years to do much in a meaningful way.

Whether anyone wants to believe it or not the U.S. is sitting on enough oil that when the other countries start running out of oil we will be the new oil producing nation! why do you think we are not drilling our our own oil right now? we are just sitting and waiting for the right time.

Slowlane this could be part of your "invisible hand"?

Slowlane I am not sure government is the only threat. This article a about $200 a barrel oil being in our future seems reasonable IF much of his "facts" turn out to be factual.

I have read it through and it is in line what I have been reading for the past 15 years on the subject.

What do you think of his take on the subject of fuel issues and prices?

I purchased diesel fuel for $1.91/gal in Homestead Fl a couple of weeks ago. I like Murphy Oil in front of the Walmarts 'cause they keep surrounding vendors honest.

Elsewhere in Fl, GA & SC it was from $2.15 to $2.29.

Gas prices were good but for 8-10% more than gas I was getting 15mpg as opposed to 10-11 when I towed with my gas Silverado 5.3L

The Swinomish Tribe gas station on the outskirts of Anacortes was $1.91 yesterday. Costco in Burlington was $1.92. Maybe having two refineries in town is starting to pay off!
