MapQuest printed directions. Poor souls, I had MapQuest try to send me on a harebrained route once in the early 2000's (23 miles on a state route with literally about 100 stoplights instead of taking the parallel interstate), swore off using them then and there. - afidelExplorer II

I love how HeavyD has made helping people into a good living that employs a lot of good people and helps a lot of people without charging them. Seems like the kind of guy I'd love to sit down and have a beer with =) - Nv_GuyExplorer IIIHere in NV lots of dirt roads have designations as highways or County road. Some of these roads are passable in passenger cars, most are rough in a 4X4. Unfortunately the GPS / "maps" people are not aware of this, so they treat them are passable roads. Several years ago an elderly couple traveling from Idaho during the winter followed their GPS, got stuck with the same results as this unfortunate couple.
In short, if you haven't traveled much out West, please do not venture off a paved road based on your GPS or other "map" program. Chances are whoever created the route has never been out here and is unaware of the dangers. - mobeewanExplorerYouTuber HeavyDSparks and volunteers got together and recovered the RV and car. My thought too. We recently took a trip to Texas from Pa.On the way to one campground, the GPS wanted to take us dows dirt roads, twice. I said no. We stayed on the road we were on and the campground was on that road!I always look at maps before we travel any section of our trip. The only time I really use the GPS is when traveling around large cities. - DancinCampersExplorer II

I would like to know what the sequence of events were. - ItsyRVExplorerIt is indeed tragic. Based on the Sheriff press release on location, I would assume they were looking for a shortcut back to 95 and took one of those "roads" that are really nothing but dirt trails. Once they were stuck, they tried to make it somewhere in their car and that also got bogged down. They first spotted the larger RV from the air but could not see the small car which was only a couples miles away. Once they got to the RV and discovered it empty, they used it as a reference point to fan out searching for the car.
Having lived in the desert, I have always followed the practice that if you get stuck in the RV, stay with the RV as it's bigger to find and at least have the ability to provide survival resources.
