RV state sticker map opinions

So a fellow camper and I had a discussion the other day around the campfire. We had differing opinions on filling in the states map of the states that you’ve camped in.

The general rule at least we agreed on was you had to sleep in the state for it to count. Not just drive through.

The difference of opinion came as follows.

Does the map represent states the you slept in regardless of what RV you visited the state in? As in the map can be transferred from RV to RV when you by a new rig.

Or

The map only represents the states that you stayed in with that particular RV.

What say you???

We don't have a map yet, but I was talking to a friend about it. His father mounted his flag to a piece of plexiglass, so they could take it with them when they got a new camper.

The conversation came up because our current practice is to get a magnet or sticker for the campground/location/favored food establishment of places we visit. Those stickers or magnets go on our outdoor fridge door. Its a great conversation starter with our kids or friends when they see a particular magnet and ask about it and we can revisit those adventures again. I find that to be a little more personable than just a map. But we may end up doing both. We will be getting a 5th wheel when I retire and doing a cross country trip with my children (like my dad did when he retired) so we might start a state map there.

But for the record, my thoughts are if you stopped somewhere in the state, it counts. You don't need to necessarily sleep there, but if you were on a CAMPING trip and stopped to see the worlds largest ball of yarn in Kansas... that's a state "successfully" visited! 😃

Your map, your rules. Simple as that. The same goes for the little maps that some of us have in our forum signatures.

(My rule is that I have to sleep overnight in the RV in the state. A short nap doesn't count, but spending a night boondocking or at a Wal-Mart parking lot does--it doesn't need to be a formal campground. Since I haven't had any other RVs, I haven't had to formulate any rule about transferability.)

Actually, the map on my RV itself doesn't have any states filled in, because it was placed there by a previous owner, and they carefully removed the filling-in of the states that they had visited, and so a bunch of the states that I would need are no longer there to stick in. I suppose I could go with a sharpie or a small paintbrush or something and fill them in, but...well, that sounds like more work than I care to expend on it.

If our wheels drove through it, then we put the sticker on. So far we haven't been challenged by any state agencies.

I add State stickers whenever I drive through a State. For some States I have no interest in staying overnight.

I sold my camper with the map on it. I took a picture before it left. When I ever get another camper I intend to repopulate the map again just as it was with the last RV. I use the map to keep track of where I've camped, not where my camper has camped.
However, it's not like there are rules. You could just fill it all up so people think your a master camper when you haven't been out of your own state. Stick Hawaii on there just to blow people's minds if you want.

The map represents whatever you want the map to represent. They seem to have fallen out of favor tho.
