RVing in 2022

With the price of fuel going up as fast as it has been, I am sure most folks are reconsidering their plans for 2022. Are you ?

My daughter's family was planning a trip to Disney World with their camper but just cancelled the campground reservation in favor of a on-property hotel (they love camping and will do several trips in MI this year).

We all know that new RV sales in 2021 set records. Do you think there will be a lot of 1 and 2 year old RVs for sale this spring ?

Camping this year will be in state and bordering states, cross county is out this year. I'll get some stuff done at home that has been put off so we could travel.

Camping is our passion so weโ€™ll never stop doing it for any reason other than maybe health. But it does make it tougher, not only the price of gas, itโ€™s the price of everything going up! We still work so all our trips are local. We did 18 last year and towed 3000 miles. If we do the same this year it will cost around $400 more in fuel. What is more concerning is the cost of food, entertainment, maintenance etc going up. I think that will add up to a lot more.

We all have just two choices, "Pay it or Park it". I have no intentions of parking our rig, so we plan to carry on as usual. A $1.00/gallon increase at 10 MPG only adds $100 to a 1,000 mile trip, and our budget can handle that. We favor state and national park campgrounds anyway, so our per night costs overall stay well below the private park prices. Right now we're enjoying a 10 day stay at a National Park Service campground in the Big Cypress National Preserve in Florida next to Everglades National Park at $15/night with our Senior Access Pass. It's an electric only site, but our next Florida park belongs to our RV club, and will be just $24 for a full hookup site. After that we'll be back to state parks in Florida and Georgia, all at prices well below the private park prices.

Yep, its making me reconsider our travel plans for 2022. Its making me thing about booking *MORE* trips, and try to get out more! ๐Ÿ™‚

Why? because with fuel being so expensive, I thinking more people will get out of camping and cancel their trips, and more camping spots will be available for the rest of us. Maybe I'll be able to get into a place or two that couldn't before cause it is always booked up. And, maybe we won't have to book it a year in advance, and do a little more of the fun 'spur of the moment' trips. What a concept. ๐Ÿ™‚

Yeah, I think camping/RVing in 2022 may well get better, actually.

We traveled in 2008 over 2500 miles pulling our fifthwheel when diesel was over $5 in parts of the US. Iโ€™ve set a limit of $7 before we change our plans for 2022.

maybe the bright side of high gas prices is that it will be easier to get a camping spot!!!!

My philosophy, which has worked well is "never start a hobby you can't afford in the long term".

My guess is youโ€™ll see more RVโ€™s for sale. The main reason is people will start feeling poor once again. Last time was back in 2008.

Record RV sales in 2021. People felt rich back in 2007. RV sales were good back then also.

Credit is great for buying things you canโ€™t afford currently. The problem is your future self has to pay for it. If the future is bleak looking, well itโ€™s repo man time again for many.

I do think there will be a glut of campers if the fuel prices continue.

You can stay at Disney's value resorts for the same or less than at Fort Wilderness plus you can save a couple travel days. I wanted to for years to pull our fifth wheel from Michigan to The Fort but could never justify the price. Depending on the season you can spend $250 a night at the Fort.

I have been fooling with the numbers a bit, overestimating I hope.

Headed out on a six month, 10,000, more like 12,000 mile by the time sightseeing driving is added in, to Newfoundland.

The daily breakdown goes something like this.

$40PD for CGs. There will a mix of HH's, some freebees, a Wally or two in there.

$40PD for diesel based on 10MPG & estimated distance & a cost of $6gal. The truck actually does better.

$40PD for food plus incidentals.

$40PD for that catch all miscellaneous. This will include the annual truck major service, a couple of trailer tires, over $1000 ferry to Newfoundland.

$160PD does not seem too bad. Fuel burn is up of course, at about .60c per mile. Even at $180PD you can't even get a decent hotel for that, never mind all the other expenses if you did such a trip by car.

A little off topic of RV travel but pertinent to your family's travel plans. We have taken a family trip (us, our kids, our grandkids, and some in-laws) to Disneyworld ever 4 years since 2003 when our grandkids were very small.

Flying into Tampa is a lot less expensive than flying into Orlando. About $250 or so per person. But is about 1 hour longer drive, but easy drive. Tampa airport is a lot less crowded and hectic than Orlando.

Have stayed in Disney resort properties, off site hotels, and vacation rental houses. Disney properties are nice and convenient, but expensive. We have rented up to 7 bedroom, 5 and 6 bath houses for around $400-500/night thru VRBO for as many as 11 of us. Costs shared 3 to4 ways makes for a comparatively inexpensive stay. And off site means easier to eat at lower cost restaurants. Disney food is expensive also.

If they are just needing one room then a house would not be as attractive.

However they do it I know they will enjoy it. Especially if the kids are still young enough to thrilled by the "Disney magic".

Yeah, it was just a conversation starter. Not about fuel prices. But like the media, why let a good issue go to wasteโ€ฆ

No change is planned. I traveled to Alaska when diesel was $4++ and it won't stop me now.
