You are right they will catch some sunshine in February. My alternative was to give a bit of variety but as you point out it would be hot in places like Darwin and Cairns.
It is hot in most of Australia that time of year with exception of Tasmania. They could see Melbourne, Sydney , Canberra, Byron bay plus the alternatives what Tatest and yourself have suggested.

gestern1 we are aussies curenyly living in Florida.We used to live in Newcastle 150km north of Sydney. unles u are in to bad trafik and large cities but like to se some country side I sugest u may drive up true Wisemans ferry to Newcastle along old highway, then maybe op to Myal lakes in to Hunter valley if in to vineries. Down to Blue Mountens, or also many lowly areas south of Sydney and around Melbourne.Pleace advise what u a interested in seeing or doing.

Did 3 months in Oz in 2012, Sept 18, - Dec, 17, 2012.

It wasn't as dry and forest fire-ish as 2013, but there were temps up to low 40's C.

Get. Camps Australia Wide!!!!!! Mandatory, that is.

a) do coastal heavily populated areas or

b) go inland.

I went inland, up to Queensland, then zigged east to west, and west to east all the way down to Mornington Peninsula, over to South Australia and followed the Murray River complex.

c) how much walking you want to do.

In that amount of time you could probably get to Townsville (through Brisbane) and back, or to Adelaide (through Melbourne) and back. Or you could go to Brisbane and spend some time there, or to Melbourne and spend some time there. I really like Melbourne and the wine country around it, usually went there directly rather than to Sydney on my Australia trips.

Roads are mostly connecting coastal cities. Think of it as coming into Baltimore, where can I go if I have only US-17 or I-95?

Get on an Australia tourism site. See what interests you on the east coast. If I had just nine days I would probably go to Melbourne (first choice) or Sydney (second choice) and stay in the local area. Waste as little time as possible long distance driving. From either place, you can get up into the mountains. Or visit the other.

Probably take a couple of days to get used to all the blood rushing to your head. And women would be well advised to wear slacks instead of skirts. :)
