Selling HHR dinghy and upgrading to . . .?

So we are thinking of downsizing from 2 vehicles (HHR and F150) and just having one vehicle. However, I need something that my gasser will pull (under 5K lbs) but it also needs to pull my enclosed 12' utility trailer. I have been looking at the Edge or the Equinox but am curious if I will notice the additional 1100 lbs when pulling the car. The HHR weights ~2990 lbs and the Edge is ~4090 lbs. Most of our travels are short-range but are usually on flat lands. We don't do a lot of mountain/hilly terrains. I'm thinking I would be okay with the increased weight. Any thoughts on the additional weight??

I've only been able to find the Edge and Equinox that meet the weight requirement but can also pull 3500 lbs (if properly equipped). I see there are a lot of Equinox posters on this forum but haven't noticed many towing with an Edge. Does anybody have any insight/research to steer me towards one over the other. Or, is there something else out there that meets those requirements that I have missed?

Added - I was also wondering about the push button start on some of the Edges. How do you "turn the key to accessory" with the push button.

Any thoughts or opinions are welcome.
  • A Jeep Wrangler JK Unlimited can tow 3500 lbs with the tow package. Curb weight is about 4200lbs and there's not a better vehicle out there for ease of setup with the 4 x 4 and one that's ready for all types of terrain that one might encounter, as well.

Take a look at the new jeep Cherokee latitude, it can tow 2000lbs and weighs 4000. There seems to be a lot of talk from rvers on other forums. Comes in front wheel or 4 wheel.

My 2014 Cherokee V6 can tow 4500 lbs
  • What could your 12' trailer weigh if you load it up?
I would not be surprised if you could exceed 4000 without trying too hard. Then there is the wind resistance. Don't skimp on your vehicle, IMO.

  • I just bought an 2013 Edge after a very bad experience with an Escape.

If you do a search of this web site for Edge toads you will find a lot of people that are happy with them. That's what I did along with talking to the towing specialist at Tom Johnsons Camping Center. A friend of mine works there in the service dept.

I haven't toad it yet. I just got the Base Plate on last week and still have some charge line wiring to do.

    I love driving the Edge.
