When we lived in Tempe AZ we used to get in my Jeep and head out to Apache Junction and go up US60 up through the mtns and winding roads and really enyoy the views. Then we spend some time at Show Low and then go on up to I40 at Holbrook. Then come back thru Flagstaff and back down the off the mtns through where all the Lakes are for water for the Phoenix area using the Apache Trail.
This is definitely an all day and up into the late evening outing haha... Too many things to see in a one day quick trip... As soon as you go through Payson then all the Desert heat start building on you and you know you are getting close to home again...
Everyone always thinks of Arizona as a Desert place but its the Mountains and Red Rock Canyons that catches my most memorable times...
