Sorry, gotta have TV and recliners

There are campers and glampers. To me camping means sleeping under canvas or under the stars. Although I have seen tents which qualify as glamping. Until I was 55 I was a camper. Now DW and I are glampers about 80 days a year. But since we camp almost year round it is often too hot or cold and the campgrounds are near empty. I hate to say it but at times it got boring. We missed our LazyBoy recliners and TV at home. We found the dinette uncomfortable and a total waste of space. So I ripped the dinette out and installed two slim wall-hugger recliners from Wayfair. That took 4 hours. And gave the parts to a friend with a rickety dinette. The cheapo recliners turned out to be well made and very comfortable. Adding a 24" long x 12" drink table between the recliners fit with space left over. This arrangement does not interfere with the jack sofa or swiveling cab seats so we can sit 5 guests. Hung a 20" flat screen from the upper cabinet on the opposite wall which doesn't cover up much of the window. At 6 feet away it looks like a big screen. We now have the most comfortable TV room ever. It really opened up the area and seems twice as big. I added external speakers and a Micca Speck USB flash drive movie player. I cut the cable a year ago at the SB so all my TV is from Directv Now streaming internet on an old laptop connected to a big screen TV. Saves me $1200/year and I have better TV. All my TV and movies are recorded on the laptop. I transfer what we want to watch to a USB flash drive. Then watch the flash drive in the RV. I've made a lot of other mods but this turned the RV into a very comfortable 2nd home.

We camp in the mountains, and RV at the beach. However at either place. We spend VERY little time in the TT. We mostly use it to shower, and sleep. The rest of the time we are outside. That is the whole reason we go. I hate to waste my time sitting in the camper.

But that is just us, and well the people we camp with too.

Is there a point?

Personally I think Glamping is a dumb expression. I don't camp, or glamp, I am an RVer so I travel by RV.

My current MH came with a U shaped dinette and a rather short jack knife sofa. That setup seemed fine when we bought. It didn't take long for the dinette cushions to become super uncomfortable and the sofa to start looking like ****. It has (like many others) that fake leather upholstery which just peels or flakes off. Last Aug. I converted the U shaped dinette into a regular dinette. I haven't had new (different shape) cushions made yet, but plan on doing so. I'm using other additional cushions in the mean time.Yesterday I took out the sofa and I'm expecting two individual recliners which I ordered on Mon., to show up tomorrow. Hopefully they will be as good as the reviews I've read online, never having seen or sat in one yet. :E

People should do whatever makes them happy. Nessmuk started the conversation about roughing it well over 100 years ago. People seem to forget that he also talked about "smoothing it" which is fun when you get older. My recent TT purchase included a tv but I took it out.

In a couple of weeks we are taking the boat to meet the cousins and will be bringing the wall tent, cots and other furniture. It will be very comfortable camping in a great place but not glamorous at all. Dutch ovens and a fire for cooking.

We love glamping as well but rarely have full hookups since we prefer dry camping and boondocking. Not an issue either way as we have solar, a couple of inverters, a pair of GC2 batteries, and both an onboard Onan and remote start Champion portable inverter genny. We get to our destination with rarely another RVer in site, we quickly unhitch and I set up our HD satellite antenna while DW sets up interior, just a few minutes later we have all the same channels we have at home in glorious HD, plus with Dish we have locals wherever we happen to be. Being 100 percent self-contained assures we enjoy all the amenities our RV provides whether on or off the power grid.

Our TT came with two nice Lazy Boy recliners. I will never have another RV without something similar.

Unfortunately, at our age one of us had an uncomfortable night weekly. The recliners allow the other to get a comfortable night sleep. Ours make perfect nap chairs. Iโ€™ve even slept all night in mine on occasion. Sometimes it is as simple as I want to work on something late at night.

The grand kids all say the recliners are more comfortable for sleeping than the dinette, jack knife sofa or bunks in our old TT.

I'm def. on the same page with you! Can't go camping and rough it when you get older without TV and something comfortable to sit in for extended periods. ๐Ÿ™‚

When growing up, I spent every summer from the day school got out to the day it started again at my parents waterfront cabin. No power, no phone, no TV, no running water and an outhouse out back. About 3 years in total out of my life. In my 20s/30s I did a lot of backpacking up local mountains and a 7 day hike along a beach in the Queen Charlotte Islands, all with a 50-60 lb backpack. Done my fair share of true roughing it and it no longer has the appeal for some reason (sigh). ๐Ÿ˜ž

Nowadays, "camping" at a CG means their hasta be FHUs and TV. Last year we took out the jacknife torture sofa and installed a double power recliner sofa. Sweet! And with the kitchen & food being mere feet away, it's much better than being at home, lol...

Congrats on making changes that are comfortable for you! That's great!

There are no rules on the books that say you have to be miserable or uncomfortable in your own camper!

Like you, we realized dinettes were horribly uncomfortable years ago. Our current camper came factory with all stand alone furniture. We ended up using the kitchen table for a catch all, and eventually took it out and all the chairs, and 2 rocker chairs and put in it's place a 3 seater household recliner couch. We use fordable camping end-table for tables inside and outside. and love being able to swivel the couch around on wheels to face directly in front of the television, or to just sit and gaze out the huge back window on the camper. In fact, we loved the couch so much, we got an identical one for the house! -High backs and recline, great for sloshing into to and just melting. And don't have to hold your head up. Just lean back and let that high back rest your head... and oh ... absolutely great for napping!

We have always thought of our camper as our "luxury suite". It has always been stocked with nice and pretty things, and things kind of unique for camping. When we go to the camper, we think of it as our vacation resort. Nothing primitive about our arrangement. And there's nothing wrong with having the luxury comforts either. Nothing says camping has to be "primitive".

We still have a tent and when the "itch" to sleep on the ground, get eaten by ants and mosquitoes, and burn my blankets trying to keep warm around a camp fire hits me again... well ... I always have the option to do so at any time! But at age 63 with artificial joints now, and arthritis in places I didn't even know exist... I'm pretty sure my sleeping on the ground days are over! Let the gandkids do that now! Meanwhile, I'm enjoy luxury! If YOU want to sleep on the ground ... then by all means ... go right ahead! I won't stop you. But don't expect me to be there with you. I've been there, done that, and now don't want to do that any more!

Now you truly have a great place to enjoy! Hopefully, you have arrangements you can use the camper and enjoy it when not actually camping, but when at home too.

Ours sits in our driveway at home. We live in the country. It's hooked up to electricity all the time. We sleep in it every night, haven't seen the inside of the house for weeks now, except to do laundry. So, hopefully, you'll be able to enjoy yours as much too!

Nice modifications! Now you can "snooze" in style!
