Sticky front of oven

The front of the Apollo half time oven is black- maybe plastic. No matter what I clean it with it stays sticky and looks streaked and nasty. What should I be using to clean the front of the unit? Is there a magic cleaner for RV appliances?

The following only applies if the oven is ceramic coated metal. (not plastic or painted metal) Use caution on adjacent painted/plastic surfaces and laminate counter tops.

With adequate ventilation, solvent based cleaners like Brakleen, hexane, acetone, MEK (methyl ethyl ketone) toluene, xylene will cut through the oxidized grease better than household cleaners. Most of them are HIGHLY FLAMMABLE so beware if you are inside. The fumes MUST clear before lighting the range/oven or anything else.

Use gloves and lots of clean paper towels and the grease will clean up quickly.

The above cleaners are available at Walmart, Home Depot, local auto parts stores, etc.

  • I also would not use magic eraser - they are abrasive and will scratch the finish.
  • I wouldn't use a magic eraser of a decorative oven front especially if it's at all glossy. Magic erasers are abrasive and you will probably see the wipe marks when done.
  • If it's grease from cooking, soak some paper towel in ammonia (open the windows!) and left for a few minutes to soak will usually cut through grease.
  • Mean Green did good enough. It cut a lot of grease. I am working on the stove top now and the old grease is burnt on so I will try some of your suggestions. Magic erasers and maybe goo gone. Thanks!
  • Sticky like a strong solvent was used and has softened the material or sticky like it's covered in grease or something?
