Stone Mountain GA Camping?

Anyone ever camped at Stone Mountain Park in Atlanta? We went to Stone Mountain, Braves game, and Six Flags on vacation about 10 years ago. I'd like to go back and stay in the camper this time. Camp ground looks pretty nice from web. Anyone ever camped here????

At the 2014 Tampa RV Show we won 2 nights free camping at Stone Mountain. First time we ever won anything from an RV Show vendor raffle. We ended up going this past January for their Snow Mountain attractions.

The campground was relatively quiet. It got below freezing both nights and being on the lake it was pretty windy (it was windy enough the first day that the cable car didn't run). We were at site 335 on Trail M. It was a great site, right across the lake from the mountain itself. It was a pretty level site, good enough that we didn't bother leveling for a 2 day trip. Since it was free, we were happy with it. I think it would have been close to $50/night with taxes, etc.

The "gnat line", as it's called around here, is actually well below Atlanta and shouldn't be an issue at all. However, travelnman is correct, areas that have gnats can be very unpleasant as the weather warms up. Probably not terrible right now, but in a few weeks you won't want to camp anywhere south of Macon without some serious bug spray!

It's a nice campground, and you'll enjoy it.

Don't be surprised at their one time "gate fee" of $15 when you enter the park.

Be sure to use the correct entrance. Info from their welcome email message below:

In addition, please be aware that you will encounter a "low clearance underpass" with a minimum clearance of 12 feet if your GPS directions route you to the "West Gate" of Stone Mountain Park via James B. River/Memorial Drive. To avoid this low clearance underpass, you should enter the Park using the "East Gate" via Exit 8 on US78.

hole in your head, your eyes are favorite places. They can ruin being in the
outdoors down there. They are not always there, check for season that they
are visiting the park and stay away.

Thanks....I'm thinking we'll give it a try. From what I can tell everyone seems to like the park. I have small children so I think there will be plenty of stuff for us to do there. My kids have never been to the laser show and I think they'll really enjoy that.

As I stated in the linked thread, my 4 year old at the time had no problem going up the trail to get to the top of the mountain or the cable car is awesome. Check out the parks Wikipedia page for lots of info and places of interest.

You are correct on the name of the park and the distance. It's been many years since we've been there. My apologies

We will be camping there next week. lots of things to do in the park and also around the area. this will be our 3rd time there in the last 5 years. We love going there.

I love staying at Stone Mountain. We were just there a couple of months ago. Most of the sites are relative level, however, there are some that are extreme. I had a pull through a few years ago that I came the wrong way on the road because it was so un-level, that I couldn't get the back up high enough or the front low enough to get even close to level. Being in the site backwards I was able to jack the front up about 5 feet to get it level. The back of a 30 ft trailer was almost on the ground at that point.

I didn't think the sites were too crowded. They don't give you 100 ft of space for each site, but there was enough room. I've been in some where your slide just about touched the slide of your neighbor.

I always enjoy staying there.We used to go to Atlanta twice a year for a Taekwondo tournament, and have stayed at Stone Mountain, Allatoona Landing, and Atlanta-Marietta RV Resort. I like Stone Mountain the best, but it was the farthest from the tournament. I also have to attend the laser show and hike the mountain, while I'm there. Sometimes we take in some of the other activities.

I think you mean Hard Labor Creek SP, which is actually about an hour from Stone Mountain.

As for another camp ground you may try Hard Rock State park in Rutlege Georgia. It's the next exit next to the Stone Mountain exit.

We stayed at Stone Mountain park 2 years ago for 10 days, we stayed in the newer part of the campground. I think we were in site 85. We were there with a 30 foot trailer and we had room to spare, we overlooked a wooded area.
