Supervaction!

Well, we did our first BIG trip with our 5vr across half of the USA! We left Minot, ND on the 6th of June and took US Highway 52 all the way to Florence, SC. On May 21st I retired from the Army after 23 years, the kids were out of school and the wife doesn’t work summers so we had 5 weeks to do our “Supervacation”. We decided on US 52 to take one of the old “mother roads” and see ‘Merica since it went from our house to my Dad’s in South Carolina. Also decided we would only drive about 6 hours a day and this would allow us to stop by about 3 O’clock to see sites and sample local cuisine for supper. We had a blast along with some hiccups but we are now in Bowling Green, Missouri on our return trip and should be home Friday. Note: We skipped US 52 in West Virginia as it looked way to hairy for a RV!

Some things we learned:
-Go see stuff when you stop, our boys loved going in caves, seeing museums, etc.
-Find the Mom and Pop restaurants, best food and best prices.
-Stop often to take pictures and take in the sights.
-Just because the Campground says it has WiFi, doesn’t mean it does. If you advertise WiFi and I choose your CG because of it, please have it. “CG wide” WiFi does not mean I have to grab the iPad and sit in front of the office OR pay additional costs OR only allowed to check email due to limited bandwidth available to the CG.
-Along with the spare, carry another tire that can be mounted. Luckily I check my hubs and tires each stop with my infrared thermometer and noticed TWICE tire issues before they happened. Trying to find a place to get a tire to replace your spare is another story.
-Your camper could be new and in mint condition but after 5000 miles and living in it for 5 weeks, there will be some wear and tear. Definitely a reason FT’s pay more for the quality level to live in it.
-Children and CG’s with a pool are a plus, while they swim, me and the DW regain our sanity after the day’s drive.
-Manage your stress, nothing along the trip warrants a huge argument, pause, reflect and regain. The trip is much more enjoyable when you realize that although there may be an issue with the RV, you are all in it together and there is no reason the get mad at one another.

Anyway, just wanted to post that we are having a great time but also can’t wait to get home. Thanks for listening and Happy Camping!
  • Agree with you 150% hyattjlbb. Thank you too for your service in protecting us.
  • Forgot to mention one more thing:
-The "Back Roads" (US 52) can beat you up. Our return trip is/was via the Interstate System, this is why we are in Missouri!
  • Well said!

And, thank you for your service to our country.
