Tanks-------------what would be the benefit or advantage of leaving the gray tank open all the time??????

We left both closed. Leaving the gray open and with constant trickles of greasy or soapy water, you sewer hose will look and smell awful. If the gray tank never receives full water, the bottom of that tank will also be greasy.

Not a choice to leave the black open. It would be foolish to do so.

Tell him a majority of forum members agree with you.

Not fun to be in the shower when the grey tank is full and stand in your own scum.

I always close the black. I always leave the grey open. "EXCEPT" about once a month I will leave it closed and then let it drain in a couple days and flush.

You want both closed. After you've emptied the black tank and adequately flushed it, dumping the grey tank helps to clean the sewer hose (the soap in the water helps too). If you always have the grey tank valve open, you'll end up with no. 1 & 2 residue inside the hose. If you're already outside to empty the black tank, it's no big deal to empty the grey too. If you leave a tank valve open, your RV is acting as a vent for the CG system and that's maybe something you want to avoid.

Above poster may have a point on a critter of some sort getting into a tank but it's not likely to jump up past the toilet valve at the moment you open the toilet valve. If you keep the tank valve closed you're okay. However:

Closed, odor and vermin come thru open lines.

We have left both open in the past....but then there was the time sewer gasses came back at us.
then in Mississippi, I saw several large slugs coming up the pipe. I just laid our pipe outside and recapped it. When we emptied and flushed the black and then the gray next morning, after connecting, we gave them a good bath.
When we are using the washer we leave it connected. one shower each and one load, of clothes, and maybe some dishes, the tank is full. our Gray tank is 100 gallons same as potable water. We have had a bit of water in the shower.
Instructions say to and we do have it connected and open when we wash clothes and some other times. Many times we check gauges before showering, if parked a while and open, then. Closed night before to fill with as much soapy water, as possible to flus the system.

I've been to campgrounds where people left grey open and then wondered why it smelled like sewer gas at times.

Closed all valves, problem solved.

Just have him visualize these 2 scenes
A high fast flowing river moving boulders (full tank when dumping)
Or
A low slow trickle in a creek that can't even budge a pebble (dump valve left open and all liquids dribble out as they come in)
