I'm no authority on Tesla but have noticed comments that they were replacing a lot of drive units. Some owners report multiple replacements. It seems that they have an 8 year warranty but perhaps towing could worsen the problem? He probably had to stop and charge somewhere along the way. I believe Torquelift sells an EV series of hitches.
After working on various pieces of equipment that were using induction motors with 3 phase ac controllers I would caution anyone that is enjoying the quiet agressive feeling and smoothness of these cars that you are still putting x amount of torque through a set of drive gears.
