Maybe even farther back than that. Ferdinand Porsche built the first practical electric/gas hybrid vehicle in 1901. There were electric cars all over Europe and the US.
When cheap gasoline became available, everyone shifted to the fuel driven cars because of price, speed, and range of travel.
The Tesla X is no toy. There are number of drag race videos, online, and the Tesla seems to the winner every time. I think the latest loser was that new Dodge with the big HP.
