Wife and I have been watching Tiny House Hunters on HGTV. Just don't get the tiny house movement. For what some of these are going for you could buy an awesone RV. JMHO

2015 Coachmen Chapparal 324 TSRK

Well, this forum has a long standing tradition that RVs are political fodder -- only extreme right wing posts are preserved, leftie ones are deleted. And, as you know, history books cannot be discussed. So, it did not surprise me that someone got upset about the politics of tiny houses.

"True that on so many levels. I guess ignorance is bliss" written quickly before a revisionist history mod happiest w/ the status quo steps in;).

I hear ya.
3/4 timing in a DIY van conversion. Backroads, mountains, boondocking, sometimes big cities for a change of pace.

It's a joke,

Tiny house on a dual axle trailer that weighs 19,000 lbs if not more. DMV won't register them. For the cost of one you could have a really nice Hauler.

They get "registered" as a "utility trailer." Doesn't matter what the "utility trailer" is hauling on top of it.

I haven't seen the shows, but I agree that a person who makes a living on their own, creating and selling arts and crafts, is bad, and one who has a job that depends on government handouts -- like a cop, firefighter, military person, farmer, someone who works in the oil and gas industry, teacher, etc. -- is good.

Independence and personal responsibility are what's wrong with this country today.

I think the whole thing is a big con and the network producers of those shows are laughing all the way to the bank. They are preying on people who will literally agree to do anything to get their 15 minutes of fame.
The show reminds me of watching another con, Dr. Oz, when he tells people that some roots and dirt ground up in a blender will taste exactly like a chocolate Sundae. Then you watch the people gag it down and summon every ounce of muscle control to not puke it all up and forfeit their chance to be on TV.

Big CONS?????

One of my favorite past times is pausing (rewinding) a program right after some "survivalist/woodsman/frontiersman" tells the world they would be in serious trouble if something goes wrong in such a rustic area. I like to point out the house/powerline/highway, etc.. that can be seen in the backgound.

I still watch the shows....I just take it all in with a skeptics attitude.

I am sorry...but if every "build" is coming down to the wire, If you are in such dire need of a miracle to make the dead-line...how in the heck have you managed to stay in business as long as you have, and why don't you ever seem to learn from your mistakes? Or in the case of the "off the grid people" how are you still alive?!?!?!?

As it was said: The tiny home crowd, is a fad crowd. They spend, spend and spend, while claiming they are making a finacially based decision to "cut back" on expenses. The only way their tiny home is saving them money, is if they put it on mommy & daddy's property and avoid property taxes. Otherwise they would just buy a TT or manufactured home.

Each their own....hogwash to the B.S. story line...reality in the eye of the producer.

Wake up this morning and read this thread...funny because my wife and I were discussing the exact same thing yesterday while watching one of these shows. Not only can you buy a good RV (with far more amenities) for the same or less cost, but you could also by an actual mobile home. We laugh when we drive by one of our local RV dealers because they're right next to a mobile home dealer. The RV dealer puts up a banner for a middle-of-the-road right for $39,995 but the adjacent mobile home is a 3BR/2BA 1800 SF with 2x6 walls for $34,995 LOL

The tiny home are for trendy granola crunchy kinda people (of all ages) who think there's something cool about living in an upgraded version of a 3rd world country standard home. Most of the people I've seen on the shows have either a transient job or some sort of artisan occupation. In other words, they're people that don't want to work...(get the popcorn)...

Never seen the show since I've been igging HGTV since they closed down their forums and shut out most of their design and decorating shows from their programming. Not a fan of unrealistic, heavily edited reality shows of any ilk.
BUT
artisans DO tend to work but often aren't hardwired to do it in the same financial or physical environment as some others. Were we all the same this would be a rather sorry money driven, artless and thoughtless society IMO.

Signed,

A Person with Business and Art Degrees that allow me to make the dollar bills y'all to support my artsy fartsy airy fairy homemade granola side ๐Ÿ˜‰

Not gonna tell ya who I'm gonna vote for but but you can guess all you want:B.

Oh and I don't eat popcorn since my dentist advised me to give up Cracker Jacks but the man in my life does;).

I couldn't agree more!! Just a big con game disguised as "entertainment". Ice Road Truckers and Axmen come to mind as well. Oh, and the WWE, the last "real" sport in America. :W

Ah Yes, wrestling and horse racing, the only honest sports remaining, and I am starting to wonder about horse racing.

The only way I would buy a Tiny House is in a community like a park model. It is not for towing down the interstate hwy! There is a blog I just read about a couple that bought a Tiny House and now can't find anywhere to park it due to zoning issues and some campgrounds and RV parks not allowing them to rent a space there. They were in Colorado and asked to move 3x and decided to leave Colorado. A nice fifth wheel would be so much more realistic.

Were I to buy a tiny house I'd leave it in one remote spot so I could get away from it all like this one:

Maine Tiny House

Same as an RV you can get what you paid for.

I have plans afoot to construct true 4 season "RV type" full time living trailers/flatbed "truck camper" units.

I am working around my #1 design criteria for the day use living area: is there enough space to swing a cat?

No, sorry, there are no window flower boxes and falsie dormers...

or soaked insulation held in place by a "belly tarp"...

There is heat recovery ventilation, attention paid to weight and balance, efficient heating/cooling system, future maintenance...

If built on a trailer they can have all the same tanks an RV has.
