TomTom XXL Gps

Had this gps since Dec 2010 and it has served us well. Came with lifetime maps and traffic but when I went to download the latest map updates I found the device did not have space in the memory and I would have to delete some features to make room. I deleted all the voices but one and all the car symbols and I'm not sure what else before I could download the newest maps which were then successfully installed.

I assume that each map update is larger than the last so I'm wondering what will happen when the Spring maps become available. I see now why some gps have a memory card slot (mine does not). Looks like I'm approaching the end of my "life"time maps due to insufficient storage capacity. Anyone else run into this or am I being unduly pessimistic?
Appreciate any comment.
  • OP here. thanks for the helpful responses. ReadyToGo, I was able to retrieve the data you mentioned. My unit also has 1.9 gb of storage with 1.8 in use. I transferred everything from the device to my computer leaving 1 application, 1 map, 1 voice and 1 map overlay. Map size is 1844mb. dhust, I guess if the next map is over 1.9 I'm screwed. nomad, I did delete 3 old maps.
  • I had this problem with one of my Garmins a couple years ago. Tech support walked me through a factory reset to clear all of the previous map updates that had accumulated in the memory. Apparently, with some of these things, the old data is not overwritten and it hogs storage space.

  • I just ran into this when I tried to update my Garmin GPS. When I looked at the memory it was using 1.7 gb in maps and it had 1.9 gb of space. I either had to insert a memory card (which I did), or switch to using only regions of the US. The new maps turned out to be 2.1 gb.

yep, a SD card is a must for me. just remember to remove the card before you mail it in for exchange. I didn't on a previous one, read a thread here where the mfr. was kind and returned theirs, so I waited hoping to get mine back in the mail but didn't.

  • I am not sure why you are filling up. My last backup before doing the Nov map was 1.7 gb. I have had my TomTom for at least as long as yours and mine doesn't fill up. My unit has 1.9 GB of space. Plug yours into your computer and see how much space is there.
Just in case you don't know how to find out, on a PC, plug it in and bring up file manager. right click on the device and select properties.
