Tow bars

We had a fairly old Blue Ox and 1 of the bars became disconnected from the towed car(long story). Everything OK except the tow bar apparatus was damaged and we have to replace it. Getting a new Blue Ox model that says will never bind. Just curious if people generally favor Blue Ox or how is the Roadmaster or other brands? This one we are getting will cost about $900; sticker priced at about $1000.

  • For our first experience towing 4 wheels down, we bought the Blue Ox Avail tow bar. We used it this summer and it was easy to use once we figured it out. It follows well when turning, especially in gas stations where things might be tight.

    The price you were quoted is in line with what we paid for our system. If you go to a different brand of tow bar, will you have to get a new baseplate? That could be an extra expense.

    A couple of suggestions:
    1. If you have trouble getting both arms to latch when hooking up, turn the toad's steering wheel towards the unlatched arm. Drive the RV a few feet and the arm locks easily. Found this suggestion on you tube.
    2. While stopped for gas one day I checked the tow bar. The O-pin that keeps the 1/2" pin holding the tow bar arm to the baseplate fell out. The connecting pin was still there but the quick pin was not. We now travel with extra ones of these and will get a lock next summer.
  • Ready Brute Elite is what I have. If replacing today, I would get the same.
  • $900-$1000 Rediculous.
    I went to a RV/toad hitch place, and they had a bunch of perfect used ones for $150.
    My RM falcon receiver hitch mount came complete w/ everything, including B PLs for something,....modified them to fit the Jeep. And no ridiculous cross/drawbar either.
    Can't believe the ugly junk hanging on the front of some toads. And they paid $1000 for that ?

    Only the ReadyBrute Elite tow bar has the built-in ReadyBrake system. The standard ReadyBrute tow bar does not, and costs less. Either way, it's an excellent tow bar, and I highly recommend it.

    YA CAN'T GO WRONG WITH EITHER.
    Roadmaster seems to have a few less failures than BlueOx, but they're rare with both brands. Until recently, BlueOx was the more "elegant" of the two. Better-hidden base plates with easier install/remove of the draw bars. No cross beam. Roadmaster now has base plates and draw bars that rival the BlueOx designs.
    We have Roadmaster and it's easy to tell how over built their stuff is. But that's a good thing when you're towing a couple tons. That said, the earlier Roadmaster stuff, square tube draw bars and that cross beam, is nothing I'd call User Friendly.
    The Ready Brute has a great reputation and a built-in brake, but that isn't what you asked.
    At least in Roadmaster, an "aluminum" tow bar only saves a few pounds since a lot of it is still steel.
