I switched from Firestone tires to the Nitto Terra Grappler and could not be happier with the Nitto tires. There are two types, a D and an E rated version and you can save money with a 1/2 ton truck getting the cheaper D rated ones.
I put the Nitto 285/70R17 on my 3/4 ton truck and no problems with clearance. If a tire is 1" taller than the stock ones it is only going to extend out at most an additional 1/2 inch.
