Tow vehicle smells after towing
Greetings fellow RVers...
I have a rather odd problem with my tow vehicle that I wonder if any of you folks out there have had the same issue.
We use a 2011 Subaru Outback 6 speed standard shift; not automatic, as our tow vehicle. The car runs great all the time but after we have towed it about 200 or 300 miles there is a smell like hot brakes or a burnt clutch after we disconnect and drive it. It doesn't smell just being towed. This vehicle is towed behind a Tiffin 40 foot Allegro Bus with a Cummins ISC 8.3 350HP.
We use a Falcon 2 tow bar, roadmaster aux braking system and everything is hooked up properly. The car is put in neutral, ignition to aux, brake is off and we tie a white rag to the steering wheel to see it turning in the rear view camera. It tows like a dream and everything is perfect except when we disconnect and drive it, there is a burnt smell from under the hood. The brakes are not hot to the touch and the smell doesn't appear to be from behind the engine. The only thing that seems odd is the alternator is very hot to the touch.
After about a week or so of not towing the smell goes away. The only thing I can figure is that the battery is low from the aux ignition being on and the alternator is working hard to charge it up however I wouldn't think it would smell like a burnt clutch.
The car only has 21k miles and I'm reluctant to change the alternator on such a new car and the warranty won't cover that...
has anyone out there had similar problems like this?
