Towing a 1989 Ford Ranger

Anyone have experience towing a 1989 Ford Ranger, 4 cyl. std transmission, all wheels on road? I have an opportunity to purchase the truck for next to nothing and I really do not want to tow on a dolly or trailer.
  • The owner's manual, if you can find one, will limit towing to short distances and low speeds. This was the case with my '92 Ranger. That's to cover all the manual transmissions being used, by that time down to the Mazda M5OD and the Mitsubishi. Mine had the Mazda, and it could be towed. 200 miles between lube runs, I think, and 55 mph. There was no problem towing at 60.

For and 89 4cyl 5spd you should have the Mazda M5OD-R1. Check the transmission code, it should be "M". If so you are good to go. Any other manual I am pretty sure is not towable 4 down, including the Toyo Koygo 4 and 5spd, and the Mitsubishi 5spd. The Mazda M5OD-R1 came into use in the late 80's and quickly replaced all other manual options for the Ranger

    Great answer!
So many people think that an older 2WD, "stick" vehicle is AUTOMAITCALLY flat towable. Well, they can be or, they can't. Like the above post says, it depends on the make/model of transmission. Do try and find out what make/model of stick trans it's got prior to you signing the papers on it. You may be un-lucky and not be able to tow it.

We had a 1988 Mitsubishi Mighty Max 4-cyl 5-speed that we towed. Back in those years I don't think many manufacturers provided towing info. It worked, but we rarely went far. Transmission had a flat "pan" on the bottom, similar to an automatic, but I never looked up what it actually was. I remember the shifter was held with three small bolts and kept coming loose.

  • I have a 94 and it can be towed 4 down with trans in neutral steering unlocked so I would guess this one can be also. The cost of the base plates will surprise you also get it weighed to be sure its what you want. My 94 SC was close to 4000lbs when I drove it over the scales!

Go to one of the tow bar sites, roadmaster or blue-ox they will have the base plates and costs. You can also look on craigs list for used stuff like towbars etc for good savings.
  • Most manual trans vehicles are fine to tow. Newer cars have a section in the owners manual that tells you about flat four towing. I am sure someone has experience with the Ranger. Good luck.
