Towing a Toyota Prius on a dolly.

We just bought a Class A motorhome (our first) and would like to tow a 2005 Prius as the dinghy. We understand that the front wheels need to be on a dolly. Does anyone have experience towing this vehicle and if so, what configuration do you use? Ignition on and so on? If you did tow one, any bad experiences, equipment failures on the Prius and so on?
  • I tow my 2005 Prius with a Demco tow dolly but unlike tarnold, I hook the safety chains in the underside holes used by tow truck drivers. Anyone who tows professionally can show you where they are. I have no problems with the ramps, the Demco has a lever you pull which lowers the ramp section for easy on, easy off. Perhaps the newer Prius design has a lower profile thus a air dam issue. No error codes. I don't leave the car on or the emergency brake deployed. I do have it in park.
  • We tow a Prius on a Demco dolly. You will have to increase the ramp length(I use the 3 step plastic ramps) because the air dam up front will drag. just shut off and use parking brake, NOT the emergency brake. You cannot use safety chains over the axel or hook to anything under neath due to the shields. What I use is take the tow hook and screw into the provided ports under each light, and have a plastic coated cable with hooks on each end and hook one end to the tow hook and the other to the front of the dolly. Leave a little slack for turning without stretching the cable. had a bunch of error codes pop up the first time due to the computers seeing the rear wheels turning but not the front. Just drove around the block and everything got back in sync again. This has only occurred the very first time we towed. Use the Demco tie straps if your dolly will take the double strap hooks.
  • If your Prius is anything like our 2010, there's a paragraph in the owner manual about recreational towing.
