Trailer water pump cycle

Over the past couple of years, the pace at which our water pump pulls in water has increased tremendously. It used to have a nice easy cadence, but that has become rapid and short. It doesn't seem to be pulling air. Any suggestions on what might be the problem? Thanks for your help!
  • It has been happening steadily and slowly for a couple of years, but now is to the point where we have to do something, skipnchar. I know, we should have done something about it sooner. :-) Thanks for your input!
  • It SOUNDS like this behavior is something NEW that is happening so it certainly rules out the lack of accumulator. I suspect your best bet is to follow advice from Old Biscuit and look for something that's changed with your system.
  • I have no idea what an accumulator tank is but will check into it. Thanks for your suggestions, RAS43 and Bobbo!
  • Actually, that is fairly normal for a system without an accumulator (expansion) tank. Restricted water flow makes it worse. The suggestion to clean out all of the faucet screens was a good one.

That was one of life's little aggravations that went completely away when I installed an accumulator tank. That wasn't the reason I put it in, but it sure was nice when it fixed it anyway.

If you have an accumulator tank in the system it may have lost pressure in the bladder. This may cause the rapid cycling of the pump.
  • Thank you! Will give your idea a try Old-Biscuit! It only cycles when water is in full use, nothing leaking hmknightnc.
  • If your talking about it cycles when not using water then you have a leak that needs fixed. Without any water being used the pump shouldn't cycle at all in over 24 hours. If I pressurize my system with FW pump and then turn it off with no use, 3 days later I can turn on the pump switch and still hasn't lost enough pressure to cause pump to cycle

If your talking about when using small amounts of water my guess would be you have lost your HW Tank air bubble. Drain and properly refill your HW Tank and see if that restores it back to original performance.
  • Rapid/short cycling means pump is reaching shut-off pressure (pump stops) and then pressure quickly drops to start pressure (pump starts).

Probably an accumulation of crud in plumbing system

Pull all faucet aerators off....open faucets full hot/cold sides to flush lines, clean up aerators and reinstall.
Disconnect shower hose, flush it and hot/cold lines

IF pump is still doing rapid cycling.....
On head of pump (front center) is a pressure adjustment screw.
Turn it 1/2 turn clockwise to increase shut-off pressure.
