Upgrading TT, Equalizer question

We looked at upgrading from our 2013 Salem 26TBUD to a 2016 Heartland Prowler 32P BHS.

Prowler specs:

Length: 35' 10"
Dry weight: 7,849
Hitch weight: 920
GVWR: 10,160

Salem 26TBUD Specs:

Length: 28' 8"
Dry weight: 5730
Hitch weight: 815
GVWR: 7800

Tow vehicle:

2015 Ram 2500 Mega Cab 6.4L 3.73 gears
Class V hitch with 2.5" shank (not using adapter)
Equalizer 10k hitch

As you can see the Prowler is a lot more trailer but I'm not concerned with the truck being able to pull it, my concern is the equalizer, am I pushing the limits with the 10k or being a Class V hitch am I fine?

Thanks for the help
  • I would suggest going with the 1400lb bars! Your 920lb "brochure" dry tw is without a battery or the propane tanks. That alone will add ~160lbs for 2-30lb tanks and a battery. Now load the trailer up and you may be right at if not over 1200lb tw.

For reference, our "brochure" 910lb tw is about 1400lbs loaded. While we do load a little heavier in the pass through, I would guess you will be very close with the 1200lb bars.

    Congrats on the new rig!!!
  • I spoke to the dealer today, they are going to take my 10k in on a trade in for the 12k. I knew the answer, just wanted to see what ya'll thought since I get great advice from the site.
  • Check the Equalizer bars. They may be under rated for the heavier tongue weight.
