We've done it once in the last 10 years, and didn't like it. Our teenagers have gone to the beach with friends and stayed in condos, and didn't like the condo thing.
We almost booked a hotel for my daughters lacrosse tourney in 2 weeks thinking it would be easier, and maybe cheaper to drive the wife's car at 34 mpg vs 8mpg pulling a camper. All of the decent hotels were $150-175 a night. We decided to take the camper. We will just sleep there, we probably won't even get out any chairs.
I think the value of camping really depends on the price of the camper. We had a popup for 9 years. We bought it slightly used for $6k. We spent 20-25 nights a year in it for 9 years, and sold it for $5k. That's way cheaper than a motel or condo. When you get into $250k motor homes you cost per night goes way up.
