Volunteering in California State Parks

We are thinking of volunteering in a CA state park as Camp Hosts for the upcoming fall/winter. It would be in the Los Angeles area and south and probably on or towards the ocean.

Anyone have thoughts about this? I did read about some parks having problems with homelessness, drugs and all night parties. I hope that isn't the case for all of them!!

Comments are appreciated.
  • We volunteered for the CA state parks for 6 seasons in Ventura County. I would recommend it, you put in 20-24 hours a week, mostly collecting camping or day use fees and selling firewood. No bathroom cleaning. Every park is a little different. We were close to the ocean and the salt air damages your rig. We would do it again away from the ocean. Yes, there are homeless, never had a problem. There is a ranger on call 24 hours a day, they handle all the problems. A volunteer is NEVER expected to handle a law enforcement issue.
  • We volunteered at Ca State parks for many years. I was good for us, but that was a while ago.
