What's Meant By Maximum Size?

Regarding the very common "maximum length RV" restrictions at parks and camp locations, how does the "number" relate to a towed RV?

Example: Maximum Length 40'. Our trailer is 30' and hooked up to the tow vehicle we are 50' overall length. Generally when I tell a park employee our overall length they say, "we just go by trailer length".

Is it more common for these places to expect you to unhitch and try and park side by side or something, or does the 40' max size have additional length space for accommodating a tow vehicle?

What are your experiences and general views?

When I checked at the national parks out west it's the whole rigs length, TV and trailer. Does seem kind of odd though, I've got a 20' trailer and need a 40' site, which is usually the biggest.
From what I read here many ignore it and just go by their trailer size without issue.

What we have found is that the maximum length of the site is what the length of the sight is. If it is a 38 foot spot and you have a 38 foot unit then your vehicle will not fit. If it is a 48 foot spot then yes you will have to unhook and fit your vehicle in sideways or at an angle.
