Yah, of course inspect before paying. But do folks usually get agreement on price first? I'm thinking if you're 20k apart on price, it probably doesn't make sense to do the inspection yet.
If you were 20k apart I don't think you would even waste your time going to look at it. When we bought from a private seller we talked price on the phone. He had several pictures online that looked good so we drove 7 hours to go look at it. When we arrived he had it hooked up and everything running. It looked even better in person than the pictures. I took my ladder and creeper. After looking on the inside and deciding to take the next step I spent the next two hours going over everything top to bottom and front to back. I then made an offer 7k less than he was asking based on what I thought needed replaced (mostly tires) and one side of the windshield and the toilet was leaking. First he said no way so we thanked him and started to leave. He then ask if we were ready to buy that day. We wrote up a simple agreement, gave him a small deposit and left. This was Saturday and the title was at the bank. We went back the next week, gave him a certified check, he gave us the title and we drove it home.
