Winding down

Well, I had to give up my Gold Wing trike this last week due to not being able to open my hands enough to grab the levers if needed in a panic stop. I had to lift my hands and drop them on the levers which takes an extra second or two. I also am having more trouble driving the truck so I see the day in about 5 years where I will have to turn it all over to my DW.

BUT I did hear some good news from my doctor at Johns Hopkins this last week. I have a form of adult onset Muscular Dystrophy, not one of the kids form. It is called IBM, inclusion body myositis. As it has progressed I have loss more and more of my arm, shoulder and hand strength due to loss of muscle. What happens is your immune system attacks and destroys your muscles. It's like your immune system hates your body. :D So this week my doctor told me about follistatin and the research going on with it. It appears to regrow muscle! So as soon as it goes through human trials and gets FDA approval, myself and others who have handicaps because of muscle loss MAY have a cure or at least some recovery. Probably will never be a weight lifter again!!

Just thought I'd share - maybe you might want to look this up if you have muscle loss.
  • You sound very positive, that's always a plus. Good to know there is something to look forward to that may help this disease. All the best to you.
  • Hi John,
That's great news about the possibility of follistatin success. I have Primary Progressive MS and am very active in the MS community at UCSF in CA. If I may suggest you educate your self with who the Drug manufacturer is that is conducting the trials and ask your doctor to keep you in mind to participate in one of them. Unfortunately it can take quite a while to complete the human trials and approval process.
    All the best, Mark
  • I'm 67 so I'm hoping that by 70 I can be regrowing some muscle. Thanks for the nice comments.
  • How old are you john? What a shame that you will have to give up the things that you love....though maybe as you mentioned, DW can do the driving, and you can go along for the ride:)

Good to hear that they are making some progress with the disease....I guess all those Telethons did some good!

    Keep on enjoying life.....
