Yellowstone

We are planning a trip to Yellowstone later this summer. My question is, do you need to take all your food from the trailer and store it in a bear box? They say not to leave any food or trash in your vehicle so does the same rules apply to your trailer?
  • As long as its a hard sided trailer, you're ok with leaving it in there. Also need to put away grills, coolers, etc.
  • you'll be lucky if you see a bear. that said, stuff inside your trailer is fine... anything edible or smelling of food outside will get you a stern warning from a camp host.
  • I saw two bears last year at Yellowstone, but from a distance.

The best way to find a bear: Look for a crowd of cars, people with cameras, and a park ranger directing traffic.

  • When we were there we did not take our food out of the camper. We had a hardside. I would definitely take the food out if I was in a PUP or tent. And never leave your grill, pans or cooler out. We were cleaning up from dinner when the ranger rolled around. I guess he thought we weren't moving fast enough so we got a stern warning. Later I saw him remove some coolers and a trash bag that somebody left next to their tent. Idiots. I don't know if they had any bears that week, but we had some bison walk through our camp--they left a 5ft wide lake of stinky pee behind our trailer. Another bison sat down on a tent nearby--scared the people in it half to death!
  • To make a long-winded story short; just don't leave edibles, wrappings, garbage at your site. There are garbage containers for proper disposal; just use them. Y'stone has instructions on all issues that would concern you.

The very best kind to have...unused :) :) Had a grizz in the General Store parking lot this morning, fortunately not too many visitors.

So, I have never heard of 'bear spray'. I suppose I should be looking that up. Until then, will mace suffuce? (the real stuff)
