Any Foster families?

We are almost through the process of becoming foster parents for both the Tribe and the State. Once the weather gets warm, we will start camping again and should have a foster placement by then.

Are there any foster families on this site? Do you take your foster kiddos camping? What unique challenges do you experience camping with kids in your care?
  • I appreciate the insight, Matt. I know that it will be different for each kid we have, so we will approach it carefully. Camping would be a great experience for children who haven't been able to go themselves. We can go anywhere in the state with ease and need to give the court two weeks lead time if we plan to go out of state.
  • Having been foster parents, I will have to say that this is so situation dependent that I would have to caution you to see how thing settle. One foster was of the "you aren't my parents and can't tell me what to do" mode. That lasted until a case worked explained that she could stay with us and obey the house rules and orders or go back to the group home. She though about that for a little while and decided she liked having a bedroom. It was kind of funny actually. She would start to put the brakes on every once and a while and my wife would give her "The LOOK" and instantly the situation was resolved.

I wish you luck and good times.

    Matt
  • I would check with the case workers, and see if they have any restrictions. I doubt they would care less about you going camping, but crossing state lines might matter to them.
