Overnight in Lake George Area...Free

I second the state parks. We've been camping in the state parks for 20 yrs. If you can do without hook ups it is camping heaven. They have been upgrading the bathrooms/showers in a lot of the state parks recently. If you like large wooded private sites and nature around you then this is an excellent choice,not to mention they are less than $25 a night.

Local rumor is they spearheaded the focus on that Walmart as it is just down the road from about 4 local and very large high priced RV Resorts. Somehow they overlooked the new one just down the road (about 2 miles or less away!). When a fellow local camper told me about the route 9 Walmart I went and double checked and found plenty of warning signs...then looked into the one on Quaker Ridge Blvd off route 254 and they did not have any "No Overnite Parking of RV Campers...violators will be fined and towed" signs posted. The Walmart on route 9 is one travelers are most likely to drive by on the way to the Lake George campgrounds and the "Great Escape" fun park. The park has a huge parking lot that hosts RV parking when owners are visiting the park and spending money. I do not know if the Great Escape prohibits overnight RV parking however.

I live less than one hour from this tourist magnet. During the spring, summer and early fall I see thousands of RVs in the area. Route 149 that runs off the busy route 9 at the massive "outlet center" has 3 impressive large highly rated RV resorts. The newest one and the one with the largest sites and huge theme park style pool is Moose Hillock RV Resort in Fort Ann New York. Fort Ann is a Washington County town that boarders Lake George. The state has a nice and popular campground (no hook-ups, plenty of water spigots, restroom with showers and dump station) right on the shores of Lake George on route 9N just north of the Village center of Lake George!! The many commercial campgrounds in the Lake George area are not lakefront.

If you are planing a trip into the Adirondack Region of upstate New York send for a state campground guide. The state operates many fantastic campgrounds on some of the thousands of picture perfect lakes in the Adirondack Wilderness. All are excellent choices if you want to experience the real outdoors in an unspoiled wilderness area.
I make no secret that I feel the very best camping in both New York and Vermont can only be found in the perfect natural settings on lakes at state park campgrounds. I avoid the cramped commercial campgrounds at all costs!

Thanks for that link. There is no WM near me so it's only a part of my vacation experiences, LOL.

I wouldn't be surprised if the Lake George area campgrounds lobbied to have the overnight parking ended in their area. They thrive on tourism (as does the region in general) and pay big taxes for the honor.

I try to keep up with Walmart. Even though only used them 3 times in last 5 years.

One thing I have started doing before picking any place to overnight is run the zip code of where I'll overnight at thru a cite that has the crime rate. Not a perfect system but helps.
