Texas Gulf Coast Camping- trip ideas

We had planned this winter to take three separate trips for the summer vacation with the kids. We are currently on #2 now and was rained out of Destin Florida so we retreated to our usual Bolivar peninsula retreat to avoid the rain.

Trip #3 this year is for 5 days at the end of July--looking for a beach theme. Corpus Christi? Padre Island? others?

We FT in north Texas and are willing to drive 8-9 hours. Need 50 amp service and sewer connections and big rig friendly.

Let me know of your ideas and experiences with the coast and hear your suggestions.
  • Unless you already have reservations it is kinda hard to get into a park right on the beach. May have to settle for a park that is off the beach and a little inland. Corpus and the Port Aransas area is nice with lots to do...check here for parks and and reviews on them RV Park Reviews

Funny. . . we're trying to plan this exact same trip this year. Probably in September when it's still hot but after the schools are back in, we'll head down and visit some friends in Fredericksburg. From there, we'd like to spend a few days on the beach. I've never been to South Padre, so I was tempted to go there, but Port Aransas would shave a few hours off that leg of the trip.

I'm interested to hear responses to your thread. . . we definitely want somewhere safe, quiet (we're in a PUP), and kid friendly. I don't mind if we're a 10-20 minute drive from the actual beach.

We looked at Port Aransas but requires a ferry ride so we ruled that out. I have not been to Padre yet either.
  • Port Aransas is easily accessed by land from the Corpus side.

The ferry ride is just a nice 1/2 mile ride across the channel. The ferries are big, hold about 20 cars or so. Trucks and RV's use them all the time. The ferry is big, safe and FREE.

You can also get to Port Aransas by going through Corpus Christi and out to Padre Island. All freeway and traffic not bad.

Near Port Aransas you will find Pioneer RV Resort and Gulf Waters RV Resort, both really nice and just across a dune to the beach.
