crossing into Canada and back to US

Hi guys, can you answer a question for me? This will be my first border crossing with my dog and new motorhome. My question is, Scouts rabies vaccination expires in September, we travel in July, if he gets a new rabies shot, it will not be over thirty days old, but he has been covered continuously. Is it better to wait until we come home to avoid that 30 day rule?
  • Thanks everyone for the information. I may just go ahead and get the new shot, but carry both certificates. Good thought.
  • I *believe* the only requirement is that the dog have a valid rabies certificate. In your shoes what I think I would probably do is go ahead and get the vaccine but take both the old and the new certificates with me, showing no lapse in coverage. I would go ahead and get the vaccine in the unlikely event that something happened to delay my return. But that depends on your comfort level, how long you're returning before his current vaccine expires, etc.

I don't believe a health certificate is required. Not for pets. I believe that requirement is for animals being transported for "commercial" purposes.
  • And not to highjack this but we just discovered the required health certificate must be issued within a 10 day window of crossing the border. We needed to reschedule the dog's health check to fit this narrow window. Is what out vet told us. Suggest everyone check the latest requirements. Course, we had it all covered and the guards never even asked but if we didn't, you just know they will ask and you would have a problem.
  • If you go over to the section called RVing in Canada and Alaska, you will see a very similar thread that's been running awhile, http://forums.woodalls.com/Index.cfm/fuseaction/thread/tid/27033758.cfm. And that has things that have been asked of a lot of us.

At the top of the opening page over in that section you will see a bunch of stickies, for the government sites.

I'd ask your vet about the timing on your pet's rabies shot. Up here, I'm pretty sure my vet would have a variation of the rabies vaccine to meet the 30 day rule.

    Enjoy.

    :C
  • I think all you need is proof of current, valid rabies certificate. However, if you take a few minutes, you can research both the US and Canadian websites to get accurate answers to your questions direct from the horse's mouth!
