Crossing state lines laws

Old Bscuit may I ask where you got the info for the colored maps on states it's ok to travel with a monkey? It appears some of the info is incorrect. I called a few of the states offices I was interested in and Texas allows my type of monkey. Thankfully all the laws don't lump him in with the bigger monkeys. He's a marmoset and full grown weighing in at a whole 1 lb 3oz. I do want to thank you again as you gave me a good starting point for info. Debi

It seems that a week doesn't go by with out a newspaper/TV article about a monkey in someone's neighborhood. :)

Depending on the species, the parrots may be a problem. Quakers, for example, are banned in many states as are Indian Ringnecks.
There's a list at http://www.fws.gov/injuriouswildlife/index.html of species covered under the Lacey Act but you will have to check each state individually for their restrictions.
I've heard that California bans ferrets and hedgehogs among others, and is pretty strict about enforcement.
I researched this issue myself because I have Java finches. Unfortunately they're listed under the Lacey Act so they can't even cross state lines.

Monkeys are not native here, they are a hazardous species to the environment

We've only traveled with dogs, and have never been asked for medical records at state lines, but we have been asked for the dogs' shots records at several campgrounds. No problem, we keep the vet records in a binder with our map books in the cab. One would expect that if they knew about your monkey, they'd want to see his rabies cert, also. Thank you Old-Bisket. Your info is most helpful. I have traveled all over Ohio with the monkey, pass quickly through Kentucky, am free to travel in Tn. for up to 3 weeks with him. Talking to the office in Kentucky- --for a $25 permit-I can transport him through their state but can stay for no longer than 98 hours. Go figure that one out. It's laws like these that are driving me nuts. As for the birds--as long as their papers are up to date most states are cool. Quaker parrots are banned in a lot of states but mine are a African grey and a sun conure so I'm ok there. Just want to be on the up and up and legal while traveling with my little gang. With the bird flu epidemic last year and the loss of laying hens (have you seen egg prices) some states have instituted pretty strict bird movement regulations. I'm not sure that applies to parrots, but certainly many birds.

Thanks for your info and advice. I have checked out those sites and even called a few state offices with no clear answers. I always keep his health papers up to date so that's no issue. Never been stopped but a lot of cops have seen the monkey and all just want pictures. I'll try to figure out how to post a picture of him. And again--Thanks. You guys are so nice-I think i'm going to like it here.
