Fast eater

We have a 8 month old puppy, Wilson. He has been with other puppies his whole life. We have had him a month now. He eats and drinks like he will never get anything else. We even bought him one of those special bowls to help slow him down. It helps a little but not much. He always acts like he is starving. Our other dog, Pickles eats very slow. If she hesitates and walks away Wilson will pounce on her dish before you can blink. We are concerned that he may develop bloat the way he eats and drinks.

Any other suggestions to try and get him to slow down.

Misty was an inhaler of food and we divided her food up into a muffin tin to slow her down. She now has a regular bowl and takes her time.

We feed them Grain Free (Natures Recipe). The people we got Pickles from was feeding her 1.5 cups a day. We could put her food down and she would eat when she was hungry. Some days she would only eat a mouth full. Very seldom did she ever go over and eat the whole bowl at once. Since Wilson arrived like you we had to stop that as well.

Feeding instruction on the bag corresponds with what they get fed.

I tried watering down the food with a slow feeder bowl, that is helping some.

Our Rosie (chi mix, now at The Bridge) was the runt of her litter and the people we got her from said she was "the best eater" of the bunch. Boy, howdy! She was a gulper all her life and an inveterate beggar. Our other dog had been a free feeder (food down all day) and never overate. That had to change real soon when Rosie got here. What kind of food do you feed them? That amount sounds like a lot for 15 lb dogs, unless they are very active. Not being critical, but I know now we overfed Rosie and we might have had her longer if otherwise.

Yes Wilson is a small dog Jack - Chi. We feed him 3/4 cup twice a day. Pickles eats the same or a tad less each day. They both go about 15 lbs.

The bowl we have has 3 obstacle in it. I think I will try and find the maze bowl.

Thanks.

Dan, You have seen Anna and Sarah. We feed them 1/2 cup of dry mixed with about a tablespoon of canned food and mix in some warm water. Do this twice a day. Last weights were about 55# for each.

All of the dogs we have had have been inhalers. 2 of them lived many years in situations where they may not have had enough to eat, another the owner left alone sometimes for a few days and may have run out of food, and the last we have no idea as far as meals.

We crate our dogs when they're eating to avoid any of them poaching the other dogs' food. Maddie, the little maltese/westie mix, is the worst offender... I also add a little water to the kibble (NOT enough to make it float), which slows them down a little, plus it gives them some "gravy" to lap up, and reduces the amount of water they drink during the day. I divide up their rations into two feedings a day. Crating while feeding also makes the dogs think of their crates as a good place to be - they literally run to their crates when they see their food bowls being prepared.

Another option is the "Casino Puzzle Toy" that I saw on FOX News this morning. Hide the food in certain slots for doggie to search and eventually find different bits of food as he searches through the puzzle.

our 10 year old corgi, Bubba inhales his food, he finishes his bowl 3 times as fast as our 5 year old corgi. since we recued him at 7 yrs. don't know hia history but the fast eating doesn't seem to bother him. if a put a large rock in his bowl to slow him down I think he eat it for desert!

Without getting into the argument about selective breeding, please remember dogs are opportunistic carnivores. Their ancestors gulped down huge quantities of meat, perhaps starting with the intestines (veggies) because they didn't know when the next meal would come. The thing I can't explain is the slow-eater. How did that get bred out of the species?

I know several people who place a large rock in the dog's food bowl. This slows the eating.

One other friend scatters the food onto the floor. The dog can't gulp.

Our weim was an inhaler too and I worried about bloat. We had him trained to "look at me". He would stop for a second or 2 and look at me, so it slowed him down. We also made him "wait" a few seconds after we placed his dish down.

It takes time and practice, but "look at me" is one of our basic commands that we teach in general to get their attention.

Might interject it into your training regimen, as well as food training. Don't get excited when you feed, feed smaller amounts 3 times a day if possible.
