need a kennel recommendation

We're traveling to Roanoke Va in a couple of weeks to visit DH's brother. We're taking Duncan with us, but they don't allow dogs in their house, so we need to find a trust worthy kennel there.

We could take him to the near our house here, but it would be nicer to have him with us and in a kennel for less time.

Anyone have any suggestions?
  • I googled kennels in the Roanoke and Salem (the adjoining town) areas and got lots and lots of results. I don't have any recommendations, but that would be a good starting place.

Petsmart is right off of I-581, the main thoroughfare in Roanoke, so that would probably be convenient and they have a pet hotel.
  • I was hoping for first hand experience. I try to be very picky about where he stays...there are some nightmare places out there.
  • We've used Petsmart for boarding our cat. Very clean, organized, good pet helpers and we'd recommend and would use them again.
  • Our neighbor just boarded his dog for 3 days at Petsmart, and it came back with kennel cough.
  • I've never used DogVacay, but have been tempted (these are home settings--they advertise no crates or kennels). I have not read of anyone saying anything negative about DogVacay. Each sitter has reviews from people that have used their services, but, it's still wise to be cautious. I noticed one of them (Christine) from Roanoke listed that she is involved with some local animal groups--perhaps you can contact them for additional references. Hope this "link" works, as I searched the Roanoke area:

  • Thank you so much for the link. I will check some of these out, although is some what skeptical.

Let's face it, we suffer from separation anxiety, but it cannot be avoided.
