Sam-e side effects
I have tried everything over the years to find the cause of the problem. I thought chicken allergies so I fed him 6-8 ground turkeys as toppings. Then only beef. I doubt there's a dog food or any diet combination I haven't tried. For his years of 12-14 he acts like a 2 year old Jack Russell but when his stomach acts up he's totally down. He sometimes barfs up everything for the first meal after a bout. I usually give him ground meat, cooked fat drained off & rice for his first meal. He doesn't seem like he's in any pain. My new question. The only common denominator over the years is a once a day Sam-e tablet. He has been given this, with Vet approval for at least a half dozen years after a liver imbalance. Blood tests show everything ok.
PS. When he's feeling good he's an eating machine. He got me up at 4:00am wanting to eat. No, he is not spoiled. :R But I'm thinking maybe when his stomach gets empty it starts too much acid which leads to his problem that's why the Pepcid tablet at night. Would acid cause his problem? What the heck, old folks can't sleep at night anyway. :)
I copy/pasted the following previously posted.
. Our Pit has had periotic "growling" stomach for years and we have tried everything. I'm now a label reader and Costco ingredients are better than even the expensive Vet food. He's now on a supplement powder, Canine Enteric Support by Standard Process with a Metoclopram pill and a Pepcid pill with the evening meal. His problems seem to develop overnight. If he doesn't wake up with it, it doesn't develop during the day. He's ok with the evening feed. That worked for a couple weeks but he's had two bouts in about ten days. When his stomach growls he won't eat a thing, including London broil but otherwise he's a "lick the bowl clean" eater. Tests for the problem includes X-rays and a sonogram of his intestines. It's great that nothing was found wrong but it still doesn't solve his discomfort.
