Schatzi was our doxie

It's taken me months to get up and post this. Sorry in advance - it's a little difficult to type this and I hope nobody else is affected by this post.

This is a "long" story of a little loving long dog.

We lost our 12 year old dachshund Schatzi on August 29th. He had been ok with diabetes for two years prior to that.

He went with us to Texas in February and was a little stressed out - he had been eating less before we left and we attributed his lack of appetite to the stress of riding in the truck. We had hoped he'd be ok with us in the front seat with his bed and Thundershirt - but he was not thrilled unless he had his head out of the window.

When we got to Texas he got sick the second night, vomiting blood. We took him to an emergency vet who diagnosed pancreatitis. He seemed to be recovering ok the next few days, but on the way home, he wouldn't drink or eat much and we rushed home from Texas to get him back to our normal vet. When we got back, we took him in again as he was not keeping fluids down. They diagnosed dehydration and kept him overnight in the hospital.

$6600 in vet bills later, he seemed to have made a full recovery. He enjoyed the summer weekends up at the camper riding our golf cart around. Then his yearly checkup came up due in August. We took him to the vet as normal and they gave him whatever was due - I can't even remember now, probably rabies and distemper. They gave him some type of water infusion for some reason. He started panting of course because he didn't care for the vet - when we got home he was the same. But we hoped it was just stress and he'd be ok.

He took two steps and fell over... I thought he might have had a seizure or something then realized he wasn't breathing and tried to do doggie CPR on his chest. We took him right back to the vet who figured out he wasn't getting enough oxygen, he was at 80%. They put him in a chamber and let him sit there for a good hour. He wasn't much better but his pulse oxygen levels were a bit higher, up to about 90%. The vet decided to do an xray to check on his lungs and that was when we got the final blow - his heart was surrounded by fluid buildup as were his lungs. Chronic heart failure was the diagnosis and she thought it had been probably present for about 8 months. They indicated the University of Minnesota might have some chance of treating him but that long term there was a very minimal chance of survival.

So that night we had to end his suffering. We consoled ourselves with knowing that at the end he was with us - he always preferred to have us both with him. If my wife was out of sight he'd whine, if I was gone he'd whine. He was always happiest as the Three Musketeers ๐Ÿ™‚

I can't believe how much I miss him. My wife was inconsolable for almost a month.

I saw a picture today taken by another member and it just reminded me of him so much. It was a bittersweet picture, but thanks to Dutchmen for posting it. It did bring back some happier memories though and that's what we will try to carry with us as we mourn him.

That is the same thing one of our doxie's passed from. No symptoms until the morning we were renting a car and driving from AL to MI for the birth of twin granddaughters. In our case we were in our 1st year full-time and his normal vet was in MI. We drove straight thru to get him there and he passed in the vet's office that day. It is so very painful, and those little long dogs are sure a loving breed. I feel your pain and we still miss our little Riley. It's been 6 years. Time will help, but you never stop missing each and every one of the furry family members. Loving another does help. I am so sorry for your loss.

Yes, these stories affect us because every one of us understands the pain of losing a wonderful companion. Hopefully our combined thoughts of sympathy, prayers, and recognition of a kindred spirit, help you through this tough time ((((HUG))))

Sorry for your loss. They become such a part of our lives. Schatzi was loved and we'll cared for, what more can a dog ask for.

MNGeeks61, I certainly understand how what you are experiencing. We've had some very good dogs over the past (all smaller breed), and loosing each one has been painful. "Spirit" in the previous post photo, was a replacement for one we lost and a companion to the one who replaced the companion for the one before him. (we've had 2 dogs for a long time).

When "Spirits" big brother passed, he seemed to get along just fine solo, with us.

Like yours, if my wife and I are not together, he becomes very upset. If one of is in one room and the other in another room, he sits in the middle until we are together. If one leave the house, he sits and watches for us to come back. He tells us when it's bed time and drives us nuts until we go to bed, and then drives us nuts to wake us up. He keeps time better than our clock!

About 2 months ago, my daughter told us she no longer wanted her Dachshund any longer. She had the dog for 10 years. Our two Dachshunds know each other, and actually, hers is the ONLY dog ours actually is compatible with. So, we drove from Indianapolis to Kansas City, Missouri and back again over a weekend to get the dog. And the two dogs have been great together ever since.

Unfortunately, my daughter was not very sympathetic to her dog. For her, it was an "animal" not a family member and she got treated as such. We felt bad for her from the beginning and offered to take her at any time. Long story, she finally realized letting the dog out to potty was just too much work and picking up after the dog went in the house was even more, too much work. Her 3 kids were rough, and her the dog was just too much work for her husband. The dog lived in a crate more than not. She finally gave the dog to us.

Well, she's free now. Before we even got home, that crate was thrown away into a dumpster at the motel we stayed at that week-end on the way home. She's now bathed, pampered, and well fed! She's such as happy little girl now. We took her to the vet immediately and got her checked out, got her shots up to date, and ... by the way ... she had never made a single mess on the floor since we've had her. We have a doggie door in the house. AND if in the camper, she starts dancing and jumping up and down when she needs out. My daughter just never pay any attention to the sings, as it required too much work for her, I guess. (some people should just never have pets).

The two dogs are as compatible as Jack and Jill. So, now, it really is the 4 musketeers.

We are so happy to have Ruby now. Every time I look at her I still feel bad for the 10 years of neglect and (in my opinion) abuse. But hopefully, the rest of her life will be fulfilled! You can just see it in her eyes when she's adoring us ... Thank-you for saving me!
