Searching for Owner of Red Standard Poodle

I put a posting up on Escapee Forum .

The dog sort of looks like a possible "doodle" to me - so expanding the search for a golden or labra cross might help?

Thanks Larry. There has been some discussion about the different kinds of microchips on the Facebook group. How much of that is getting back to the person who has the dog, I don't know. I have no contact with her myself. I just saw this post and am spreading the word in hopes that someone recognizes the dog. But there are people in the group who are local to where this happened and have offered to pick the dog up and have it scanned again. Not sure where that stands.

There are three types of microchips for dogs which use different frequencies. Be sure that the scanner you use to scan a dog for a microchip is a universal scanner and will pick up all three frequencies of microchip. Many shelters or humane groups purchase a scanner which is aligned with the chips they dispense or use but does not pick up all three frequencies. I had our greyhound microchipped with a new microchip some years ago, took him to the vet, and they could not find any chip. They had a dedicated scanner which just did not pick up the "European" frequency chip. Had he been lost, our vet would have said he had no microchip, when he actually had a new microchip.

If the dog is well cared for it may be worth double checking this dog with a universal scanner.

BTW, if a dog has a microchip, the chip has to be registered or it is a long haul to find the owner. Send me a private message if you need help on this.

The dog is in good condition and has recently to have had a very nice and most likely costly grooming. Someone must own her and want her back.

Thanks rockhillmanor - emails sent. I suspect you're right about the owner being distraught about this. This dog is well taken care of and I doubt the owner dumped her. The possible scenarios of how she ended up where she did are endless.

The dog appears smarter than the prior owner. Hope his new home is better than his last. Who would let any animal out at a gas station to run loose?

She has been scanned - no chip.

Regarding surveillance camera question, one post I read said a license plate couldn't be identified from it. But I'm waiting for clarification on any other info regarding the rig. Actually, they're not even certain this dog came from the motor home. What they do know is the owner of the motor home asked if he could walk his dog around the area after fueling. Later, after the motor home was gone, this dog was seen wandering around with the leash on. Apparently nobody actually saw this dog come from the motor home, but they are assuming that it did.

In the case of found pets, it's important to remember that the situation may not be as it appears. Vehicles sometimes get stolen with animals inside of them, and the animals later get dumped by the theives. Or the pet's owner may have simply forgotten that the pet wasn't in the rig already when he pulled out. It may sound inconceivable, but I've heard of people driving off leaving their spouses and sometimes a kid or two behind as well. Strange things do happen, and not always because the owner is a bad person - just distracted for whatever reason. The goal is to find the owner first and foremost. Whoever he or she is, they might be worried sick about this.

The manager decided she'd take the dog home and keep it if no owner came forward. After two days of questions, we found out who had the dog, the gas station manager, and that she took the dog in for a scan two days later. There was no chip according to vet".





If in fact the dog's owner decided to abandon the dog, and I have utter comtempt for anyone that would do so, the forum rules and good taste prevent me from saying what I would like to do to this person.

If the owner hadn't checked back as soon as they noticed the dog was gone, this dog has found a much better home. This isn't a dog that wandered away and was found miles from it's last known location. This dog was found where the owner knows he let it out, at a place where it would be easy to start looking. The owner isn't looking for the dog, so unless it is a kidnapped dog that escaped it's captors, this is a search that neither dog or the dog's owner wants to be successful.
