2000 Dodge 1500 Conversion Van Computer or Not?

I have a 2000 Dodge Ram 1500 Van and I am afraid the computer is going if not gone. The problems I have with it are as listed, and they happen off and on:

1st the check engine light is on with a code P0505 which points to the IAC, have had it replaced 3 times

2nd sometimes it idles high no mater what I do

3rd sometimes it idles very low and stalls out if I stop and dont keep my foot on the peddle

4th sometimes the check engine light goes off and the van seems to act fine

5th fuel mileage has gone from about 15 mpg to 8-10 mpg

6th when I try to hook up a diag tool to pull the codes it sometimes connects to the computer and other times I have to plug and unplug and plug in the tool many times to get it to communicate to the computer.

Do you think the computer is gone??
  • Replaced IAC valve three times, so probably not that. Next would be the throttle position sensor if you haven't already. And yes check all grounds and connections to the ECM.
Coolant temperature sensor bad or faulty thermostat not keeping coolant at 190 or so will cause bad fuel milage.
  • The most succinct and definitive product of a code reading is to tell a mechanic where to start looking.
  • Dont know about the problem with hooking up the code reader, but the high idle, low idle deal, throttle position sensor, could be bad & not telling the computer what to do, so the engine idles crazy.
Another thing, fuel, like if the in tank pump is weak or the filters about stopped up & the correct amount of fuel pressure not getting to the fuel injector.

  • I'm going to move this to Tech Issues, I think you will get a better response over there.
  • Check your wiring for chaffing, especially around the steering column. There was a year or two that had wiring problems. Also check ALL the ground locations for loose, broken, or corroded connections. They are all over under the dash, hood and in the engine compartment(under the dog house).
